If Mayweather is so small, why not fight JMM at 135-140?

Interesting post with some good points made. Is the game then really attempting to get two fighters who are within a certain "acceptable" weight difference? Is 5 - 10 pounds more important than other advantages for example height and reach? If all welters had to come in at 157 or lower fight night then could cotto, mosley and the rest achieve this without a problem, id say yes. Im sure floyd could manage a 150 or a bit above fight night too. Wasnt he 152 for de la hoya fight night? But the rules are the rules and everyone tries to play them as they see fit in order to maximise their chance at winning. I believe ive seen cotto weigh in at 155 fight night and i think ive heard he weighed 159 another time. Would a lower max weight limit fight night make it more likely that floyd would fight some of the other "true" welters? I dont know, how about someone asks him if he thinks about this kind of thing. Ive never heard floyd say i dont want to fight cotto (example) as he will be too heavy fight night. Im sure he couldnt say this even if he was thinking it. Remember sometimes the heavier you are the slower you are, relative to your height.

If for example floyd came in at 152 and another welter at 156, i personally dont think this is a problem. How far does the 156 stretch before it becomes an issue?

Really, what is so bad about a 4-5 lbs difference. The size isn't that big

disagree. JMM is a great fighter when the pressure is coming to him as witnessed by his efforts against Manny twice and Juan Diaz. He can lay traps by feinting he can definitely counter better and his footwork is such that he always seems to be in great position to attack even if going backward or letting someone press the action

against Manny, short of two rounds, he had the faster stronger fighter guessing his attacks. He had Manny on the defensive more than any fighter I have seen because there were times that whenever Manny attacked he got something back in return

against Diaz people just assumed the pressure Diaz applied would be too much for an aging Marquez, fighting at 135, would be able to handle. However, he used Diaz's own pressure against him and was able to walk Diaz into some helacious shots.

JMM has issues with fighters who make him go on the offensive. Casamayor comes time mind he basically had JMM at a stalemate until Casamayor finally succumbed to age and fatigue. Barring that it was a closely fought affair.

7 pounds make a difference, that's why we got "divisions".

For one last time, in ONE corner you get a "natural WW" that has made a career from 130lbs. to 154lbs. That his best years were at LW; and even though last time he fought at 140 lbs was in 2005, he fought at that weight for a year or so. That boxer insist in dropping at 145lbs, not a pound less.

IN the OTHER corner we got a boxer with a legendary career as a FW, last 2 fights as a LW... In order to be able to fight, he will be force to fight for the very first time at over 140lbs (10 pounds heavier...).

To ask Maragrito to drop 7 pounds and fight 140lbs. is a joke. The same might go with Cintron, PW, Clottey. But if Berto, Cotto & PBF are asked to do so, they would drop the necessary pounds cause they are suppose to be great athletes. Refusing to fight under 145lbs to fight a natural FW is just straight up "bitchie" at the least.

In my opinion if a WW wants to fight a great FW like JMM, 142lbs would be acceptable and fair. If PBF wasn't such a *****, we could be getting a better match-up for the money.

              • The fact of the matter is, this fight is a sham, it's designed to make floyd look good against an outmatched p4p fighter. We all know, jmm doesn't have a shot in hell against him. He;s a great fighter but, his attributes and style dont do him any favors in this fight. It's going to be an ass beating.

                    • its really really simple people...

PBF can compete with JMM @ 143 or even 140... no problem...

but he definitely has a no doubt about it advantage if the fight will be held @ 147...

reacquaint urselves to the tough negotiator, savvy businessman floyd mayweather jr...
