No announcement yet.
If Mayweather is so small, why not fight JMM at 135-140?

Someone said that the really top guys should be able to handle 1 weight class from where they are at the moment. So, that means that if floyd is "really" a light welter, then he should be able to "handle" welter. Doesnt it?

If fighters weigh-in at 147 and then blow up to 170 come fight time (which seems a bit exagerrated) then so be it. The rules isn't perfect but is regarded as safer than same-day weigh-ins. It's up to the fighters to deal with the rules any way they want. So if Floyd can make 130 and blow up to 150 come fight-time so be it. It's his decision.
PS (off-topic): I saw that thread and I don't think we should go back to same day weigh-ins but perhaps a second weigh-in at fight-time could be added which stipulated how much weight a fighter is allowed to gain.
No, we'll just stick with Gatti-Gamache days. And are you telling me nobody has died in boxing since?
People die in boxing....that's the sport.
If all is fair then, I don't want to hear anybody ***** about this fight with JMM or Pac fighting Floyd since where are the opposers for that fight bitching about Floyd having to fight someone like Clottey who will show up 20 pounds more than him by fight-time?
Where are the people that should be bowing down to fighters like Chris Byrd for ballzing up to fight GIANTS like the Klitschko brothers, Ibeabuchi, McCline, Tua (well just in weight and thickness), etc.
Talk about a resume to showcase the size of your balls. But no, few praise him and most ***** about the guy even though he was a MW eating his way up to HW.
Floyd is a FREE AGENT. He is not fighting for the WW title and this fight will not get him ranked as a WW even though I suspect they will list him high any way upon his return. He just wants to fight at the weight of 147+. And since we don't have to have fighters coming in at the actual weight of 147, we don't even have to say it is a WW bout unless we call it a TRUE/LEGIT WW bout for once with possibly having both fighters show up at 147 max weight (if they so choose).
How is it any different from somebody making a "catch-weight"? New rules are made every time this happens. That's a new division...a Free Agent division. They could make it at 147.2 just to say it isn't a WW fight since it is .2 over the 147 limit. Now nobody can ***** that Floyd isn't fighting a WW because he is no longer in the WW division but a new division of 147.2 or maybe 148 just to make it even.
CLOTTEY WAS SAID TO BE 170 FOR HIS FIGHT WITH CHICO
Time: 3:20
I've said many times before, the one thing that annoyed me with Floyd was that he was saying he was the best at WW but didn't prove it against the elite of the division. Yes, he beat the lineal Champion in Baldy, but not the guys that I felt and many others felt that he should have been fighting at least afterwards...but we also knew he was going after the Golden Boy so part of it was promotion. It's just the way he did it which leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
When he comes back (and if he comes back), he cannot say he is the best at WW if he doesn't prove it unless he too wants to ***** about how it is a game of dehydration and rehydration and that they aren't real WW and that he wants to fight fighters that are actual WW, like Pac (who weighs 147+)
I'm for a Cap as well (with certain rules to leave some room) which was discussed in my threadLast edited by Benny Leonard; 04-20-2009, 02:52 PM.

1: Floyd is a WW
2: JMM is a LW
3: A fight at 147 is unfair.
4: This is not HW where huge weightdifferences has been common since before the Marquis of Queensbury was born.

Floyd is only insisting on fighters that are actually his weight...that would be under 150 or "147." Fighters like Pac are 147+ and so is Hatton and many other JrWW. How about we skip the weigh-in and have fighters fight at their actual weigh-in weight thus making a better division that has Floyd facing fighters his actual size come fight time instead of forcing him to play the dehydration-rehydration game like everybody else. Why penalize someone that is as close to doing it the right way as possible since he is only two pounds over the WW limit and more than likely can make 147 on the spot by fight-time given he has made it before when he was active as a WW; although who knows now to be honest.
That's why I say take Floyd out of the picture since more people are making it a Floyd issue more than the boxing issue itself. That's why I liked the conversation way back when it was about Gatti-Gamache. I wasn't in favor of what Gatti did and Gatti is one of my all time favorite fighters to watch.
Legal, yes...given the way things are allowed to happen....right, not in my eyes.

JMM called out Floyd thus he should have to fight at the weight Floyd so chooses. He doesn't know what Floyd weighs? How about Floyd call out Pavlik and force him to come down to WW.
JMM is now a JrWW since he said he was moving up to try to fight Pac.
JMM will be fighting fighters that are the same weight as Floyd come fight time even though they will dehydrate to make 140 and then blow up in weight to get to 147+
Pac was a lightweight that showed up at 147 by fight-time. Yeah, that makes real sense.
Clottey is a SMW, well two pounds more than a SMW come fight-time, yet he is allowed to fight in the WW division because of the "rules."
JMM now cannot fight Pac because "147 is unfair" given Pac fights at 147 himself come fight-time.
Smaller fighters have always made fights with bigger fighters even if they weren't legit HWs, like Sam Langford.
At the end of the day, it goes way back to the Ancient Greeks with understanding Nature has no weight-limits and it is all about Man to Man combats....let the best man win. DivisionS? They laugh at such a thought. One division.Last edited by Benny Leonard; 04-20-2009, 03:49 PM.
