1st of all,
I beleive that the separation from from his Uncle Evangelista, because of their "cold war" relationship, was actually a blessing for Cotto. It would be very tough for you to concentrate and focus in training and fighting by following instructions of a man on which you have lost respect and that you no longer feel comfortable with. You should have more concentration and focus by training with somebody that you have no problems with even if you don't have a personal relationship with that trainer.
2nd of all,
I agree that Cotto has the skills to fight a Clottey without a great trainer, but what will happen when Cotto starts to brawl like he likes to, and starts going against the ropes instead of using his qucikness, boxing skills and movements to avoid punishment. That's were Cotto will need a good trainer that can "try" (note that i said try) to persuade Cotto from receiving this unnecessary hits from his rival. Which leads me to my 3rd point.
3rd,
I would had preferred a proven trainer at this stage of Cotto's career. Cotto is currently 1 lost away from saying good bye (or 1 win away to say hello) to several Mega Fights waiting for him. If he beats Clottey, and with the Margarito situation, a lot of people will forget his lost and probably be ranked again amoung the first 5 P4P, therefor this is a must win fight for Cotto, at least money wise. For this and all the remaining fights, he should pick a good defensive trainer, to at least, improve a little his defense. This new trainer should have the balls to tell Cotto what he should continue doing, what he should stop doing and what he should start doing, during the fight. Especially a fight of this caliber and importance in Cotto's career. A rookie is not what I would had chosen for Cotto. If it would had been the fight against Jennings even I could had trained him, but not for this fight. True that there are a lot of trainers busy for these days but there were still some experienced trainers available.

On the Florida training issue, people forget that when Cotto was being identified with several personal issues that were going on (i.e drinking etc...) he started training in Florida and it worked out pretty good at that time especially when he had his last fight at 140 and was moving up to 147. I think he had 3 fights training in Florida and he had 2 ko's (Branco and Quintana) and 1 unanimous decision (Malignaggi)on which he looked pretty good an quick (I might be mistaken on the fighters so feel free to correct me).
Therefor IMO it is a good decision to train in Florida.
I know that this decision, was what triggered the fight between Cotto and his Uncle, but know that it did happen, training in Florida with a rookie trainer takes extra meaning. Knowing the media in Puerto Rico, they will be every day After Cotto trying to get a reaction to his uncle's brawl and the will try to have a Field Day with the rookie trainer and that itself will add to the distraccions that Cotto is said to have in Puerto Rico.
On another note, we need to remember also that in several fights, Evangelista Cotto didn't make the trip with Cotto to where the fights were to be held and would arrive afterwards, this because it is well known that Evangelista has a lot of young boxing prospects and according to a source close to the Cotto family, was what triggered the fight. Miguel Cotto beleived that he needed complete attention especially at this stage of his career and was trying to do so by concentrating himself and his trainer in Florida. Being that Evangelista didn't want to leave his other boxers he got very upset and the argument started. Evangelista needs to understand that at this point any other boxer was secundary to Cotto.
