I think Dawson's promoter wants him to play it safe and not get into the ring with a prime LH who can punch, like his current mandatory Cloud or past mandatory Diaconu.
Dawson of course fought a strong puncher in Adamek, who floored him in that fight, but that was for his first world title. Since then, he has been matched carefully. He won't even rematch age 40 Johnson (a volume puncher with only moderate power).
He couldn't rematch Johnson right away because he would of had to give up the WBC belt at that time. Dawson instead gave up his belt to fight Tarver for the IBF title.
He would of rematched Johnson right away if the WBC wasn't so strict on the mandatories.
I didn't know Branco pulled out, Diaconu has had some bad luck with cancelled fights.
Looking forward to this if it happens, interesting matchup.
Actually Branco didn't pull out,the fight got cancelled officially cuz Fragomeni on the main event got injured but really the promoters couldn't reach an agreement.Cherchi(Branco's promoter) wasn't gonna fufill his side.
Some good fights in Montreal this summer: Bute-Andrade II, and perhaps Diaconu-Pascal.
Anyone see the Pascal fight on Saturday? that punch he knocked out his opponent with was great. I will have to watch some more of Diaconu i haven't seen much of him.
