Hatton’s got no defense — Roach

Hatton’s got no defense — Roach
    By NICK GIONGCO
    April 3, 2009, 6:24pm
Day in and day out, trainer Freddie Roach just couldn’t seem to understand why fight fans keep on asking him why he thinks Manny Pacquiao will get past Ricky Hatton as though the British is just a mere speck on the road and not a roadblock that some aficionados love to portray him to be.

“Hatton gets hit easily and he’s got no defense,” Roach told the Bulletin Friday from the Wild Card Boxing Club, site of Pacquiao’s training camp for the May 2 battle with Hatton at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

“Manny is way much better than Hatton. I just can’t see Manny losing the fight,” said Roach, who believes Pacquiao will get the job done in three rounds or less.

“I am more confident in saying that Manny will beat Hatton than when he fought (Oscar) De La Hoya,” said Roach, who presided over another heated eight-round sparring session involving Pacquiao against hot welterweight prospect Raymond Serrano of Philadelphia and rugged lightweight Urbano Antillon.

“Eight rounds of good and hard rounds and Manny just keeps on getting better and better and I am happy where he’s at right now,” said Roach.

Still, Roach wants to instill in Pacquiao’s mind that he cannot afford to relax against Hatton.

“Getting his back on the ropes would be the biggest mistake (that Manny will make),” said Roach, when reminded that in one of the workouts with Antillon, Pacquiao allowed his sparmate to pound away as though he was a punching bag.

“He’s getting bored that’s why he does that,” said Roach, noting however that Pacquiao will be on his guard next week with the arrival of Mike Alvarado, an unbeaten junior-welter from Denver, Colorado.

Alvarado holds a 25-0 record with 18 knockouts and is fighting underneath the Pacquiao-Hatton show.

Roach stressed that Pacquiao just cannot elect to stay stationary against Hatton, who thrives against fighters who stand still and trade at close range.

Under Roach’s plans, Pacquiao will go eight rounds on Saturday “then go nine rounds next and ten rounds before going 12 rounds (sometime in the third week of this month).”

Hatton has a clinch defense that works really well. Maybe not next month or with mayweather but it usually does

look folks i will admit hatton's defense is a problem...but if you look at his only loss against mayweather he got beat because floyd had such a good defense...its a myth that if your fast and outbox him you can beat hatton....and pac's defense is not what i would call world class...its average at best....and i don't think this hatton will be a sitting duck like he was in his previous fights.....i think roach is hyped up too much on manny which he should be, but i think hes ignoring what ricky can bring to this fight.....i think pacs defense is more suspect in this fight than hatton's....we have seen hatton take big shots from much more powerful guys than pacquiao

thats true...but i really dont see if hatton gets hurt that clinching will do any good....he might have to go to his trademark which is just walk through ugly shots...its part of his reputation...i think thats how he is going to have to hold up against pac imo

Pacs defence and footwork will be tested by Hattons suprisingly quck footwotk and ability to cut the ring.Unlike some of the people here who describes Oscar as a Walking Corpse" he was aggresive the first 2 rounds.....
Hatton will be a more skilled, faster, stronger david diaz, the chin are about the same imo..If hatton can take the first few flushed left straights and right hook the first 3 rounds and walks thru it Hatton will probably TKO pac midrounds.......thats a big IF though

true...i think hatton is going to have to pull off a margarito vs cotto like performance minus the plaster....and what i mean by that...is margarito just walked through gigantic shots and kept coming.....thats what i see ricky doing....and i think margo has an above average chin imo, but its not like concrete as previously thought...and i've heard other people besides myself play the cotto-margo scenario in this fight...not saying it will go identical to that...but i see pac dancing around the ring...hatton taking big shots walking through them, and then slowly hatton is landing on pac and hurting him...but oh well we will see...i just dont see the clinching reputation of hatton everybody seems to think

I think its gonna end early for either man sometimes...........either ricky's gonna respects PAC's Power the first few rounds then Rickys gonna get KOd if he doesnt clinch, or he walks thru them sooner or later Hattons gonna catch him in the body down goes PAC.....
