I always thought it was a great tactic, pretty much impossible to fight with 2 dead arms. Joe Calzaghe did it a bit when he went in swinging wildly, but he pretty much hit every part of your arms, body and head. I cant really think of anyone else.
****ing up the arms is a good tactic if the fight is a long and protracted war of attrition... in 12 rounds fights, that's probably not the best tactic

Wow. A BETTER chin than Marciano, who mind you, gets hit allot more than Ali did and was only knocked down or hurt once in 49 fights?

That's a big statement. If I recall Ali was knocked down by Chuck Wepner, among others, who was the inspiration for the "Rocky" films. That should say it all.

There are no real life Rocky's. Ask James Braddock or Oleg Maskaev.

Ali was great, but you should not downplay an undefeated champion who was known for having a style that has proven to have beaten Ali's. (Much like Frazier, but could rip the right hand too)

Chuck Wepner stepped on ALi's foot before he fell.

And yes. Marciano would have gotten blasted out by some of the punchers Ali faced.

I've seen the knockdown several times and it was legitimate. He got clobbered with that shot. See this link:

I never seen Marciano drop like that before. Not even when he was facing monster punchers.

I know everyone has an opinion and I can respect that, so I'll just leave it alone.

Everyone has seen the knockdown, but you saw it from the waist up. There was no overhead shot of it, and it has been said by many including the fighter, that Wepners foot was on Ali's which made him fall like that. The man took Foreman's and Shaver's best punches FFs.

People might not realize it but it was Ali who took more punishment during the later part of his career than Marciano ever did.

JJ: Were you sure you had him at that point?

CW: I thought he went down in between the ropes and all and Al said you better turn around he’s getting up and he looks pissed off. It wasn’t a great punch but I caught him off balance and he almost went into the rope, the bottom rope, and if he would have fell out of the ring we would have won the fight on a fluke. I would have won it. His [Ali’s] eyes were real wide. He was more or less surprised than anything else. He wasn’t hurt. You could hear the punch. I just caught him off balance.
Ali wasn't hurt at all. He was off balance and tripped.

As far as I know, he was only dropped by Archie Moore in his last fight.

By the way, Archie had a crazy record of 148-19(107 ko's) at the time and had been knocked down several times himself. Moore had also only been stopped 4 times before in 167 fights.
