If anything, Vitali looks to have trained harder. he was fighting an undefeated unknown, who had a good reputation as a puncher. Lewis was scheduled to fight someone he knew he would have an easy time against.
a man whos already on the top fighting someone who doesnt pose much of a threat is not going to train as hard as someone searching for a title, imo.
As always I respect your opinion. What gets to me is that some people think that Vitali came in fully prepared to fight Lewis while Lewis hardly jumped rope in his preparations.

oh, neither of them were in their peak shape for their fight. but overall I think Vitali was a little more in shape than Lewis, comparing them to their previous fights.

had they actually prepared to fight one another and had distinct gameplans planned out, I think we would have seen quite a different fight.

it's pretty obvious that Lewis was not in the best shape that he could've been. Also, Lewis was not even mentally into the fight. Lewis already had a foot outside the door when he fought Vitaly.

Holmes was the guy from that era that had talent and worked his ass off to get where he did.

But you can read any old boxing magazine from the 50s till now and its just like today. They say the fighters of today suck compared to 20 years before. 25 years from now they will be talking about what a great era this was. Hopkins, Calzaghe, Klitschkos, Mayweather, Mosley, De La Hoya, and how great they were compared to the fighters that are around then. Personally I think this is a pretty good era, although pther than the Klits the heavyweight division is a mess.
With all respect, Calzaghe was a trick. If he's lucky he will be referred to as Marciano, with a *. You don't fight 2 forty year olds and expect to make history despite being dropped. I can take the Klitschkos, mosley and mayweather though, those are pretty good picks in their divisions. Hoya too.

Well If you are not bandwagon jumping American teenager with a chip on his shoulder.. then I apologize... It's gets really old arguing the past with people who have been watching boxing for 6 months, repeating some popular myth that seems limited to very particular demographic..

Uhm, doesn't it say "England" in my location : part? Apology accepted np, we all make assumptions about people. I do believe Holmes era was more superior than it is now though, although it was considered lack-luster at the time you're forgetting that it was trying to live up to the Ali era which was just plain impossible and made it seem alot worse at the time than it really was. Imagine comparing todays era to the Ali era? lol.

You'd pick Hoya over Calzaghe? I'm by no means a fan of Calzaghe but even I think he deserves more respect than that....lol.
