lewis tought he was gonna fight patterson who is a bum. Vitali was a young and hungry fighter so he traind hard for every fight
There is a big difference between fighting a 12 round world championship fight and fighting a clubfighter on the undercard. The preparation for a championship fight is much more rigourous and you'd have better sparring partners.
Lewis was coming of 2 of the best wins of his career when he squared off against Vitali so he obviously had a lot left.

Kirk Johnson had already been knocked down and DQed against a former Lewis sparring partnet, John Ruiz.
Cedric Boswell was undefeated and pretty well respected at the time. he wasnt a clubfighter.
It had been a year since the Tyson fight, and Lewis was even heavier than the time he lost to Rahman.
Vitali was the same weight as ever.

Are you saying there's no difference in preparations?
Lewis was only like 5+ pounds over his weight in the Tyson fight. for such a big man it's nothing. It's very normal that HW's gain weight during the course of a career as do other fighters.

it was 7lbs. its not a huge amount, but Lewis had shown in the past that he fought better when he kept his weight down. I think more than anything it was his age and year long layoff.
If anything, Vitali looks to have trained harder. he was fighting an undefeated unknown, who had a good reputation as a puncher. Lewis was scheduled to fight someone he knew he would have an easy time against.
a man whos already on the top fighting someone who doesnt pose much of a threat is not going to train as hard as someone searching for a title, imo.
