[QUOTE=Dave Rado;4971950]
The WBO belt is the least respected of all the alphabet belts and their rankings are a joke - hence Jennings was Cotto's mandatory and WBO's no. 1 contender at a time when he was only rated #50 by boxrec. Williams wants to fight for the lineal title and he wants to fight top Welterweights, not bums who the WBO calls mandatories; and he should be respected for that.QUOTE]
Corrrect me if im wrong but wasnt Cotto/Jennings for a vacant title?Comment

Mosley has earned the right to fight who he wants. I might catch some heat for saying so, but the guy has paid his dues. Real talk.This is what kills boxing.Suppose the Boston Celtics said they didn't want to play the Lakers or the Yankees said they didn't want to play the RedSox,wouldn't that be an injustice to their sport and fans?Boxing needs a higher authority to step in and make this sport legit.They should order unification fights so there can only be one champion per division and they must defend their title three times a year.Top contenders must battle for the number one spot.This would keep all the top guys in the ring facing each other.If they weren't willing to do it then they wouldn't have a boxing career.What Shane is pretty much saying is ,he doesn't want to fight Berto or Williams cause they can beat him.He wants the easier fights for bigger money.Makes sense financially but cheats the fans and is a disgrace for any athlete who claims they want to be the best.Comment

My point was that the WBO rated Jenning, a journeyman who was only ranked #50 by boxrec at the time, as their top contender - so he would have been Williams' mandatory if Williams had hung on to the belt; and Verno Phillips and especially Winky Wright are several leagues above Jennings. Someone in this thread thinks he'd be more credible if he fought bums like Jennings than if he fights a future Hall of Famer like Winky, and a solid highly rated fighter like Phillips, and I was responding to that.Comment
