A peak Jones beats a peak Hopkins 10 times out of 10.

He was one of the greats and in no way is this ANY hate on Roy. But many say they would like to see A Hopkins Jones Rematch! Forget about it...Hopkins has proved himself way over Roy and it would not be good for Roy to make that fight at this point in his career. What do you think?

Originally posted by The_Bringer View PostI gotta agree. Infact, Hopkins got the ultimate "get back", by surapassing Jones in terms of Legacy. The things he's done post-Taylor are mind boggling, he schooled the guy who kicked Roy's ass 3 times in Tarver (Roy got a gift in the first fight), he beat P4P#2 in Wright, he had a damn close SD loss (which many think he won) against the guy who ****d Roy 11 rounds to 1 in Calzaghe, and he just got done schooling the undefeated Middleweight kingpin in Pavlik.
I think his Legacy is greater than Roy's, and it will be even furthered once Hopkins beats the brakes off Adamek's ass and takes his Cruiserweight strap.
He has every right at 44 to cherry pick fights he thinks he can still win, but that's what he's doing in fighting Adamek rather than Dawson. Dawson schooled Adamek, who is a limited fighter. It would be a good achievement to win a lineal title in another weight class, but it won't enhance his ATG status. Beating Dawson would, but he doesn't want to fight Dawson, presumably because at his age, he doesn't think he can cope with very fast fighters like Dawson any more - which is fair enough; but because of that, fighting Adamek won't enhance his ATG status.
His win over Pavlik was a great win, and does enhance his status, but Pavlik's style was made for him, plus Hopkins himself has said that Pavlik was fighting above his best weight. It was primarily a great win because of his age and the fact that he was expected to lose - a peak Hopkins would have been expected to win easily, so in ATG status terms it didn't make much difference to his legacy.
Winky was fighting well above his best weight class and looked flabby, yet was still competitive. That was a good win but not a great one.
Everyone keeps saying Calzaghe isn't an ATG, and they're probably right, but if they are, then losing to him, however close it was, certainly doesn't enhance his ATG status.
Tarver had ballooned in weight for a film just before the fight with Hopkins and looked lack-lustre in their fight; and hasn't looked good again in his subsequent fights. A good win, but not nearly as good in reality as it looks on paper.
And as I pointed out in my previous post, ATG status isn't based primarily on how well a fighter ages. Hopkins has aged far better than most fighters ever have, but Archie Moore aged at least as well, and Moore isn't ranked nearly as high in the ATG lists as many fighters who didn't age well, like Ali, Hagler and Armstrong.Last edited by Dave Rado; 03-22-2009, 03:20 AM.
