Fighting the Pac-Hatton winner would excite the public because of the current vs. future P4P angle; I don't think he should be criticised for taking that fight, provided he either fights a top Welter afterwards, or moves back down to 140 permanently.

Cotto deserves it based on what? The knockout loss to Margarito or the stiff he beat last month. Cotto is a tough fight but a fight Mayweather doesn't need. He beats Cotto and what would that prove? Margarito just knocked the guy out and then got his ass handed to him by Mosley. The real fight for Mayweather would be Mosley and right now Cotto is under the gun to fight Mosley.

Arum can't even offer Mayweather enough money for the Cotto fight. Cotto/Pavlik PPV did 150K buys. Mayweather would want at least 12 mill or more for any fight. Arum can't afford that right now. He was barely able to get together the money Pacquiao demanded for Hatton.

But what does beating Pac have to do with fighting Floyd gain? He was beat decisiely the first time. Both Mosely and Cotto are more deserving of the
Mayweather fight and more dangerous than Manny. Didn't Floyd say if he came back it would be about legacy, not money? If he wants to shore up his legacy at 147 he has to fight the best fighters, not rematch guys he already destroyed and fight a guy who is almost unproven at that weight.
