Unless it somehow someway involves Mike Tyson or Holyfield's 78 kids, Heavyweight division is going to get no coverage.

...Again, if ESPN didn't care then why take the fight in a slot reserved for NCAA coverage? It's a huge deal for ESPN. Can you tell me the last time they hosted a legit heavyweight title fight? They just suck and they are blowing an opportunity here. Those afternoon heavyweight fights from Germany are great.

As expected the fight is huge in Germany and also draws headlines here in Denmark.

This is their FIRST EVER Live Heavyweight title fight... BUUUUUUT at the same time the fight is gonna blow so i am very happy that nobody will be tuning in

...It still makes no sense to me. Hell, they have had much better coverage of heavyweight fights of little consequence that weren't even televised on their network recently. They are showing this one on ESPN for ****s sake.

I'll tell you what has surprised me: the Cubans living in the US don't appear to be too excited about it. I can't say for sure if they're not, but surely if they were it would be a much bigger event. Isn't there like a million of them in Florida alone?

Nah...ESPN has more than one single channel. They can televise the games on ESPN or ESPN 2 (more likely the fight will be on ESPN 2). Plus I'm sure they worked it out where they can televise the fight and not take the place of one of the meaningful games (or teams) in the tournament.

And honestly, Vitali vs Gomez isn't necessarily a "legit" heavyweight title fight in the sense of names. I made this reference a while back that in the 80s you could walk the streets and ask who the heavyweight champ was and you'd get a definite answer. Today, people will give you the "huh??" face. It just is what it is, Vitali is no huge draw overall (and I don't mean solely in Germany)

From what I've read Gomez seems to have had a great camp and he talks the talk. Several good stories could be made on this encounter. A shame if ESPN doesn't seize the opportunity.

Gomez might surprise.
