That is an easy one. For the simple fact that they don't have to. Modern fighters earn more money in one fight than throwback fighters did in twenty of them.

Money...........Not that dont have to..they dont want to...Abraham seems like hes fighting every other week same thing with Vic...Boxers went from pride and being a proud champion to being a prima donna and thinking they deserve 8 million for every punch thrown...Seems like no fighter wants to be the best just the highest paid...Pac,JMM,Rafa,izzy seem to fight to prove theyre the best..I know theres more but no need to drag this on..you get my drift

Keep in mind, a lot of those dudes who had records like 113-22-4 were fighting a lot of club fighters prior to them making it big.

These days with agents, managers, promoters, etc, the up and comers are watched over a lot better. It's not necessarily pampering, but if you look at how dudes like Cotto, Victor Ortiz, De la Hoya, and others post the 80s era..they've been brought up gradually and got into the big fights at the right time.

And these days, having an "0" early in your career can dictate how long it'll be before you get a title shot (depending on weight class of course)

Because they don't have to. Modern boxers don't have to fight once a week just to eat anymore - moving a fighter along slowly is more profitable in the long run. Additionally, demand for boxing is way down from what it was in the 40s, even a marquee name can't be a money draw fighting too frequently. Events have to be more carefully planned.

Fighters make as much $ for 1 fight as the old school cats did for several.
