You're right.
Ali said that for every step Foreman took, he had to take two or three which would've led to him being tired out in the later rounds (especially under the Zaire heat). So instead of dancing away from Big George, which at that time was close to impossible (I don't remember anyone beating prime Foreman by moving away from him), he chose to let Foreman tire himself out instead.
Ali, Young, Lyle and Peralta earlier in Foreman's career had success against him but none of them were truly able to use movement, all of them had their backs against the ropes and countered inbetween Foreman's wild punches.
When Foreman came back in his 40's, using a lot of movement was the key to beating him.
As for the Lyle fight I thought Lyle also had some success slugging it out with Foreman. At least thats how I remember that fight. A prolonged slugfest.Comment

Yeah. I remember Ali wrote that even though he danced a lot in the early part of his career, he made sure his opponent took as many steps as he did. I remember checking that by looking at some old Ali fights and he was pretty much right. That amazed because it always seemed as if Ali was doing the moving, but in essense it just shows how great Ali's footwork was.

He doesn't really cut off the ring though!
Fighters generally come to him and throw and then he counters. I mean, either way, no matter when they throw, he just counters off of it, so area of the ring doesn't matter that much.
The Taylor fight is not a good indicator, because he really loves having the ropes on his back or something.Comment
