I dont think alot of people know what "household name" means. People are naming Hagler and Leonard. Only hardcore boxing fans know them. The casual-mainstream boxing fan doesn't even know who they are.

Household name means if I was to go to my grandma and ask her who "[insert name here]" is, she would know.

If I mentioned Muhammad Ali or Mike Tyson to my grandma, she would know.

If I went to the immigrant liquor store owner and asked them who Muhammad Ali or Mike Tyson was they would know who I am talking about.

Oscar Dela Hoya is a household name as well. Just not as widely known as Ali or Tyson. Because every latin, hispanic, mexican, salvadorian etc. household knows who that man is.

And most people around the world are familiar with these names...

They are like Jordan, Jabbar, and Magic Johnson in Basketball.

Dela Hoya, Marciano, Duran, Leonard, Foreman, Jones are not too strong and too popular to be a household name IMO...
I agree. those are the only two names that are known by ppl who have never watched a single boxing match in their lives. I started watching boxing in 95, but before then I had already heard the names Ali and Tyson.

Even though DLH and Mayweather have the ppv record, I doubt non boxing fans really know who they are.

I partly disagree... Many people who knows tyson and ali don't buy ppv... and many people who are not fans of boxing knows ali and tyson... dlh is known only to boxing fans...

In the UK Frank Bruno, Ricky Hatton, Nassem Hamed, Amir Khan and older fighters such as Henry Cooper, Barry Mcguigan, Eubank and Benn are all household names.

Take off Leonard off that list and Louis seriously even a lot good boxings fans that i know have no idea who joe louis is. The only 3 guys on that list should Ali, Tyson, and Oscar if we are talking about household names in the US. In other parts of the world different fighters are household names.

Holyfield is more of a worldwide household name than Delahoya
