I mean that can be said with a lot of things. A 5 yr old kid may not know who Michael Jackson is, but it would be a far stretch to say Mike isn't a household name.

I'm basing it on people who have some grasp on what goes on in sports. Pavoratti is a household name to many, but not everyone listens to Opera.

What I mean is, if you are going to mention just the last name, Tyson and Ali will be recognized by almost all generations worldwide wherever...

Foreman?... there's a lot of foreman
Dela Hoya?... there are some dela hoya here..
        Hollyfield? maybe
        Leonard?... not sure
Pacquiao?.. only in asia and later generations

Everyone knows who is ali and who is tyson

I agree. Unless Foreman gets in for his grills. I doubt most folks in a household without at least a casual boxing fan have even heard of DLH.

That said, there are regional variations. Frank Bruno and Henry Cooper in particular are very much household names in the UK. And I've no doubt at all Pacquiao is in the Phillipines.

I wouldn't say Oscar was a household name in the UK
If my mother knows who Sugar Ray Leonard is then he's pretty much a household name.

Unless you're asking people who have no remote access to a TV in the last 25-30 yrs
You can take Marvin Hagler and Rocky out the equation.
