Mike McCallum vs James Toney II

I just can not for the life of me understand the result of this fight! I had McCallum winning 7/8 rounds because he outworked, outlanded and most importantly out-thought James Toney. He was improved from the first fight and rarely got caught with the straight right/right uppercuts that Toney was able to land in the first fight.

How the first judge scored it even is mystifying enough, but how the hell did the other judges score it 117-110 & 118-110???

McCallum only won 2 rounds? What fight were these judges watching. Absolutely disgraceful decision.

Anyway, vote for who you think won and post what score you had/any thoughts.

You know my thoughts. I thought McCallum won, and the scorecards were wildly inaccurate.

Toney had more close shaves than DLH.

Yeah I agree with you 100%. The first fight could have been 6-6 / 7-5 McCallum I think. It was very close and Toney had a lot of success with his right hand. McCallum completed negated these weapons in the rematch though! They didn't call him the Professor for nothing!

      Damn robbery!

There were not many really effective punches landed in that fight by either man, but the one consistent weapon that was landing throughout, whilst Toney was not doing anything was McCallum's left hand. Toney worked in spells too, he did not work the whole round.

Decisons that Toney got away with, when he should of lost........Tiberi,Rahman 1,McCallum 2,Oquendo.

I know a lot people/Toney fans like to act like Toney dominated the Jirov fight, but there were people at the time who thought Jirov should of won that fight.

To be honest I don't see how Jirov could've won the Toney fight. No controversy there.

I agree about the Tiberi, McCallum and Oquendo fights but Toney has had a couple of decisions taken away from him as well.

I don't think Jirov should have won the fight, but Toney definately didn't dominate it. There were too many periods when he was inactive and let Jirov win rounds just by throwing punches.

When Toney worked he looked sharper, more accurate etc

The only decision i can think of that you could make a case that he lost, where he could of won........... is the second Griffin fight. I think he deffo lost the first fight, and i believe Peter beat him the 1st time aswell. I dont see how anyone could say Peter robbed him, when Peter kept the pressure on him most of the fight and that fight was a high contact action fight. Peter also hurt Toney in that fight.

Toney said he got robbed in second fight, and that was a clear loss for him.
