There's a thread in the Fantasy Fights section of this site where I thought a lot of Americans were being very judgemental on why a lot of people favoured a middleweight Chris Eubank to beat Hopkins [or at least give him problems]. It seemed to me that people didn't look at the whole picture [Eubank was a different figher at middleweight etc], and seemingly looking past Hopkins' faults. It was a case of ''They're all Calzaghe fans or biased Brits'', blah blah blah. But like I said in that thread, Hopkins has not shown he is one of the sport's truly hard men, by any means. He has unquestionable talent and dedication. But he comes across as nothing more than a bully. Why was so much time spent in the same division fighting smaller men? And all the talk of being tough, when all you're doing is fighting smaller men and bullying journalists?
And contrast that to Eubank, who ended his career taking heavy blows from a full-fledged crusierweight. And who, earlier in his career was involved in a war or two. There used to be a time when I didn't like Chris Byrd: I thought he was making a joke of boxing. But as the years have passed I've really appreciated just how much balls that guy had doing what he did. Sport should really be about always testing yourself to the limit, not just staying in a comfort zone. I think that's probably what separates the good from the really great.Comment
