But the "punch" that hit Calzaghe wasn't even a punch, never mind one that would KO anyone. It was a forearm.
I've been quite vocal on here about my theory behind this, and some may call me crazy, but I think the 'knockdown' was faked.
Shock Horror!
So, why would he do that? Well, think about it. There are several reasons why, and if it was faked, it was a damn smart thing to do. Joe Calzaghe knew that the fight wouldn't even be competitive, and he proved this by giving Jones the beating of his life, possibly worse than Lacy. Making it look like he got knocked down does two things: it makes Jones think that all he has to do is keep throwing power punches to knock Joe out, and it also makes the public think the fight is more competitive than it really was. The first reason is smart, because Jones leaves himself wide open to be boxed while ever he's throwing power punches, right? The second reason is also clever, although it might be fooling the viewers a little.
Seriously... who the **** gets knocked down by a forearm? Have you ever seen it in your life? He then goes on to absorb massive uppercuts later on from Jones and doesn't even flinch. He took much more powerful shots than the forearm tha supposedly caused the knockdown, and he walked right through them as though nothing even happened.
Call me crazy, say what you want, but it's a theory I've been thinking about since the fight happened and I'm absolutely convinced there is something wrong with that knockdown.

but then again it was a forearm.

The forearm isn't protected with padding like the fist is.

You only need one word to describe why Hopkins got tired: "Pace".
He couldn't keep up. It really is as simple as that.
Again, I'd buy it if Hopkins wasn't clinching so much. It helps him conserve energy. He's throwing accurately but little, and he clinches frequently and tried to take 10 minutes worth of low blow breaks. Calzaghes walking him down, but missing 2x as much as he's landing if you want to call it that. Against Pavlik the offense is turned up to the max, he's moving backwards and at angles a lot despite being so much quicker when he didn't have to and clinching a fraction of the time. He's moving constantly.
Oh, Dirk, c'mon. Hop chose to fight Kelly like that. He could've hauled ass backward the ENTIRE fight like he usually does but said in the post fight interview he purposely came into that fight aggressively and would do so in the future for fear of losing any more close decisions. Part of that was him actively pushing to make Kelly look bad and not just Kelly's deficiencies allowing him to go wild and look like Superman.
If he didn't mention his philosophy change against Pavlik, I would've thought him incapable of fighting at such a pace at that point. For now, I'm taking BHop's word for it...overactive thyroid against Calzaghe.Last edited by Haglerwins; 03-05-2009, 11:49 AM.

I don't believe Joe Calzaghe would have been knocked down by the inside of a forearm and then been merely tickled by a Roy Jones uppercut. Sorry dudes, it just doesn't wash with me.
But as I said, it's a theory. There's something dodgy about that knockdown, in my opinion.
PS: I've had enough now, I'm gonna find a different thread.
