Everyone around here can say "Tyson lost to this guy" "Tyson didn't fight that guy" "Tyson didn't reign long enough", but the fact of the matter is that Mike Tyson is one of the greatest heavyweight champions that ever lived. Way underrated by a lot of critics.

With all the people that say how one dimensional he was and how he didn't have the longevity, he becomes underrated in my eyes. I mean Bert Sugar had him #100 on his top 100 list. A list that is comprised of like 30 fighters born in the 1800's. No offense to the old school but give me a break. Tyson would knockout half the guys Sugar put ahead of him in Round 1.

Hate Mike Tyson for his ******ity and for his inability to keep his nose clean outside the ring, not for his time in the ring, which was one of the most legendary careers in the last 50 years.

How is he overrated? Please explain

He's rarely rated accurately, I will say that. He tends to be either hyperbolically overrated or underrated, with little middle ground (with the scales tipping toward overrated).

He beat ppl with ease in his prime. I mean how many ppl fight over 15 times the first year and 12 the next year? Not even a year about a year and a half and then get a title shot at 20? That's a hard task in itself to do.

Exactly. I'm still waiting for someone to explain how the hell he is overrated.

Tyson was a really good fighter in his prime but a lot of people, not just Tyson fans but the casual fans and even some boxing fans make him out to be an indestructible machine in his prime who would have beaten anybody and everybody on any given night, that is why I find him to be massively overrated.

There's no denying though that he was a very good fighter who had great potential.

Word up. Tyson was dope in his prime. It only spanned 5 years though.
His style is what caught my attention. Tyson looked like a fcukin animal in there. His power, explosiveness and quickness is what was dope about him. And the fact that he bit a piece of Holyfield's ear off. Only Tyson would do that sort of thing.

I'd consider him one of the greatest. Soley based on his boxing capablility and skill. It's hard to analyze him as one of the greatests based on his career, cus it was fcuked from jump street.

              Tyson's on my list.

I think there are more boxing fans that say he is overrated like you, then fans who say he was indestructable. Which like I've said before is the main reason I believe Tyson is underrated. With Tyson, people tend to see the bad and forget all the good. During his championship reign, he was not one of the most dominant, exciting, fighters ever, he was a TRUE undisputed heavyweight champion. For boxing fans, we haven't even had a heavyweight champion since Lennox Lewis. You would think that title would be more respected.

The problem is that Tyson fans often offer excuses for his short-comings, such as the time spent in prison, Cus D'Amato dying, Don King, the media, etc. but every other champion in the past had to deal with the same kind of adversity as well which is why he cannot be rated above the likes of Ali and Louis, who also spent their prime years out of boxing and had all kinds of racism directed at them. Despite that they achieved a lot more and spent more time at the top than Tyson did.

No one will excuse Louis' loss to Schmeling even though he barely trained a day for that fight nor Ali's loss to Frazier although he had been out of boxing for 3 long years.

It's a myth that D'Amato's death affected Tyson's career since Tyson had not even fought Berbick for the title by the time Cus had died. You could make the case that firing his trainer Rooney did, though.

A totally plausible argument. When i look at fighters, i also incorporate their skill and style as well as their achievements.
