Danish boxer Mikkel Kessler turns 30 today.
A boxers record doesn't always speak for itself in the boxingworld. Crafty promotors can guide boxers to championship fights via wins over has-beens and never-was'es only for the boxer being exposed as mediocre when faced with a worldclass opponent.
Kessler's record is impressive with 41 fights with 40 wins, but there's nothing mediocre about the Copenhagen native who turns 30 today.
Since taking the WBA title from Manny Siaca in 2004 Kessler has fought only championshipfights sanctioned by the big bodies, and has received respect for his ability whereever he's fought. Still Kessler lacks recognition in USA and it's anybodys guess wheter he'll ever get it.
A lot could have been different had he won the biggest fight of his career when he in November of 2007 faced Joe Calzaghe in Wales. Then ir might have been Kessler getting lucrative fights against Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr.
Instead it was Calzaghe who proved to be the tactically superiour fighter in the fight for the undisputed supermiddleweight title and therefore Kessler is now fighting less than stellar names even though he's world champion again.
Kessler is now fighting perhaps toughest fight of his career against his employer promotor Mogens Palle, who, according to Kessler, has failed to get the right fights.
Several injuries to his hands and back makes it doubtful how long he can continue so it's a big question if we ever get to see the full potential of 'THE VIKING WARRIOR'.
Happy bithday Mikkel!
