"The only significant fight for Mayweather at junior welterweight would have been a unification fight with division kingpin Ricky Hatton, "but he's not even looking Floyd's way until at least 2007," Ellerbe said. "So there's no need to hold up the belt and the division. The only reason to keep the title would be to make a big fight at 140 in a unification fight with Hatton, but that isn't in the cards right now. So Floyd has given up the title. This way guys like Witter and Corley will have the opportunity to fight for the title and the opportunity to reach their dream."

Then in November 2005 Hatton called Floyd out very publicly again and invited him to be at ringside for Hatton's fight against Maussa in order to build interest in a fight between them early in the New Year, and again got no response apart from his invitation to attend the Maussa fight being declined. At this stage Floyd had already moved up to Welterweight to fight for Sharmba Mitchell, although he still held a Jnr. Welterweight belt.
Then in March 2006, four months after the second call-out and nine months after the first one, when Floyd gave up the Jnr. Welterweight title, Floyd's advisor Ellerbe claimed that Hatton isn't looking his way until at least 2007, but gave no evidence to back up his statement.

"I will help Oscar out and keep myself in shape as well," Mosley said. "I'm probably the closest thing fighting to Mayweather right now, so it will be a good advantage for Oscar to work with me. I will get some fight tapes and study Mayweather and his style. I will be able to imitate him and help Oscar dismantle Mayweather."
De La Hoya is already in camp and didn't want to discuss it, but the idea was hatched a few months ago when Golden Boy matchmaker Eric Gomez, also one of De La Hoya's best friends, was trying to come up with a list of possible sparring partners.
"I had discussions with Oscar about who can help him because there really isn't anyone out there that fights like Floyd," Gomez said. "He's the best technician in the game and he has the combination of speed and technical skills. It kept popping into my mind that the closest to him was Shane. So, I told Oscar that I had come up with the best possible sparring partner."
And when Gomez sprung the idea of Mosley on him?
"He liked the idea," Gomez said. "He's been in there twice with Shane and they fought and sparred in the amateurs. Shane has given him problems before. I think that Shane can imitate anybody. It clicked right away."

"It's really hard, I keep changing my mind back and forth on who's going to win this fight," said new IBF champ Kermit Cintron, who won his title (which Mayweather had vacated) with a fifth-round TKO victory over Mark Suarez on Saturday.

"To me, it's a toss-up," said Paul Williams, the undefeated WBO No. 1 contender, who will be fighting Mario Lucero on the undercard on Saturday, in what he hopes will be a final tune-up before challenging Antonio Margarito for that version of the title.
Margarito, however, must himself first get past a difficult defense in Atlantic City on Dec. 2 against Joshua Clottey, whose only loss was a disqualification against Baldomir in a 1999 bout he was winning on the scorecards. If Margarito prevails against Clottey, his eyes appear to be less on Williams than on the victor of Saturday's contest.
"The only two threats I see at 147 pounds are Mayweather and Baldomir," Margarito recently told ESPN.com over brunch in Las Vegas. He will have, he said, a rooting interest Saturday night.
This is for the people that keep saying $8MIL for Antonio Margarito was SO MUCH for PBF to refuse:
On July 22, Baldomir knocked out fan favorite Arturo Gatti to cement his place as a legitimate champion rather than a one-fight aberration. Promoter Dan Goossen then stepped in to table a deal that contained enough money to make both sides happy (reportedly matching the $8 million Mayweather had been offered by Arum to fight Margarito), paving the way for Saturday's fight.
And here are some more thoughts from the 147 pound division in regards to Mayweather/Baldomir since you guys SWEAR that everyone thought it was SO EASY for PBF.
"Mayweather should be the favorite," Margarito said, "but Baldomir's a dangerous fighter. We'll see."
"It's a good fight," Williams said. "They're calling it 'Pretty Risky.' To me, it's a toss-up. It don't matter who you're in the ring with, it only takes one punch to change the whole night around."
"Like I said, it's a pick 'em," added Smith, although he marginally favors the underdog. "As the fight gets gritty, toward the later rounds, the championship rounds, I'd have to lean toward the bigger guy."
Cintron tilts the other way.
"My heart is going toward Mayweather on a decision."
-- Cintron
"My heart is going toward Mayweather on a decision," he said. "It's going to be a tough fight for him, but I think he's going to pull it off. I just think that Baldomir's toughness is going to take him through to the end of the fight."

IMO, there is no doubt that Mosley, Cotto, Clottey and Williams are currently all a lot better fighters than Boldomir and Judah were back then.
Not saying that any of them would beat Mayweather if they fought, but they'd be much more of a challenge in most boxing experts' minds than Boldomir and Judah were.Last edited by Dave Rado; 03-02-2009, 02:27 AM.Comment

, and thats okay but you can not tell hes the best P4P of this era, he never did really nothing to secure his legacy on welterweight, just fought a washed up oscar in a fight that could of been a draw , cause hes never faced no miguel cotto or shane mosley, berto, clottey... the list goes on.
so the truth is he should stayed in lower weight classes or come down right now that every one wants to fight him, and every body would understand if he admited that he thinks those guys are to big for him. dont get me wrong i think he has a chace to beat them and i think he has the potential of being one of the best (just physicall-athletic cause he is mentally weak).
that being said i think floyd mayweather is not better than for eg. mosley, who started at one weight above mayweather, almost the same size as him, but capable and positive of fighting anyone from welterweight or jr middleweight, and mayweather just maybe capable... and has never faced the type of fighters mosley has.
and for goodsake he was 31 and in his prime when he quit,, why stay retire now that he is wining the most money, and avoiding the top fighters in the division he has claimed to be the best... thats not being a leyend ,not a P4P not even a real fighter.
by the way great fight by marquez, he is truly a great fighter with courage, and has all my respect, he is the best thing in boxing for mexico right now, and is sad most of the people in the country have no idea what he has acomplished in his last two fights, they have to get over chavez retired so they stop putting their hopes in the juniors, because by the way boxing is right now we dont need more superstars that are not willing to fight the best.Comment
