Carlos Baldomir is underrated.

I agree, he is like the clean Margarito. Much respect to Baldo, good tough fighter. The man really is. This isn't a thread to make Floyd Mayweather look better, this is a thread to give Baldomir credit.
I'm not saying Baldomir is the best fighter ever, he's not really great either. However, people **** on him all the time. He is pretty much done and has been since losing to Vernon Forrest, but he is underrated.
People act like the Zab Judah fight was a fluke. He had a very determined gameplan when he kept going forward and kept landing his right hand that kept pummeling Zab.
Not only that, but the man was an UNDERDOG when facing Arturo Gatti! He not only proved the critics wrong, but he KOd Arturo Gatti "WITH A LEFT HOOK THAT ABSOLUETLY RUINS HIM"
He also had since 1999 not lost a fight. I'm not saying that Carlos Baldomir was an amazing fighter, but people act like he was a complete bum. Since 1999 he had beaten some decent prospects and even Joshua Clottey (I'm well aware that he was losing when Clottey got DQed thank you)
He's not amazing, but through hard work he became welterweight champion of the world. Respect that.Comment

What puzzles me if that people thought he was a big puncher who would be risky for Mayweather. The problem is Baldomor only had like 13 kos in 40 wins or soComment

He's underrated because he KO'ed a shot, welterweight Gatti?
Got it.Comment

No he's underrated due to the fact he gets next to no credit for his wins, even the Judah win, which is by far a lot better then some boxers have done. The dude was Welterweight champ and had worked his way up the hard way. Maybe if you'd read the actual post and instead of nitpicking the part about Gatti. Gatti was pretty much done, but Gatti was the favorite. That deserves a little respect when you win as the underdog.
He got lucky? Have you seen the fight? It was the gameplan of Baldomir.
If people keep pressuring Zab Judah after 3-4 rounds, he starts to crack. Zab is also very open for the right hand. Baldomir took advantage of both.Comment

Baldomir fought no less than 4 times in Denmark and compiled an excellent record over here with 2 wins 1 draw and 1 loss. This is an excellent record since he was brought in as the fall guy against danish stars or prospects.
He's first fight over here was a decision loss to the superb technician Soren Sondergaard for some useless alphabet title. Sondergaard wasn't used to lose rounds at all and was a world class fighter back then. Tata won a couple rounds in that fight.
Next year (1999) he was brought in to test the undefeated Frank Olsen (son of Kessler's trainer Richard) and handed him his first loss in 31 fights. Olsen was highly regarded at the time at was hyped as being the next danish star. I remember a dejected Olsen after the fight said that Baldomir might not posses crunching KO power, but his punches were very heavy and that he could really feel those body shots.
Olsen was stopped in 10.
Then in 2001 he was brought in to test Hasan Al, a distinguished amateur, and got a draw in a fight he probably would have won had the fight not been in Denmark. A couple of months later there was a rematch which Baldomir won with the final scores of 114-113, 116-113 and 117-111. The first judge was off. That fight was not close. This fight was also Hasan Al's first loss.
I figured that Baldomir was better than just your ordinary journeyman and with some luck and good management he could make a splash.
If anything his record in Denmark is excellent! Taking the precious '0' away from the hometown favorite is definetely an acheivement. Doing it twice is ecxellent.Comment

Atleast he can proudly say something Margacheato and Quitto cant...Winning the linear title and being THE CHAMP at 147 pounds.
Not just winning vacant belts...but working your way up he beat contenders like clottey, olsen and Aguzum...then he fought in a title eliminator against Miguel Angel Rodriguez and won, then beat judah, then beat gatti, then lost to the P4P No 1, and a vernon forrest who would give a lot of fighters trouble without injury.
he didnt find any shortcuts....impressive considering he was selling feather dusters in argentina once, his family was really proud of him and he could finally make some money.Last edited by Xplosivo; 02-24-2009, 02:19 PM.Comment
