Miguel Cotto Batters Jennings To Snatch WBO Crown

By Cliff Rold - Miguel Cotto (33-1, 27 KO) has tasted defeat. Clearly, it disagreed with him. With Terminator-like precision, the 28-year old Puerto Rican superstar calmly walked down 31-year old Michael Jennings (34-2, 16 KO) of the United Kingdom over five rounds on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden, capturing the vacant WBO Welterweight crown in the process. Cotto immediately re-enters the crowded top of the best division in boxing.

    Clearly, he never left.

Both men weighed in below the division limit, Cotto at 146 and Jennings at 146 ½.

After a stirring rendition of the U.S. National anthem by a lovely Christine Vaskas, and a raucous welcome by the Garden faithful, Cotto came out with his trademark solemn aggression, stalking the lankier Jennings to put the memory of his July 2008 stoppage loss to Antonio Margarito behind him. The posture was intense but the action wasn’t until the final minute that a hard punch, a left to the body for Cotto, landed. Jennings stayed at a distance with his jab and circled away for most of the round, occasionally flirting with a straight right hand. [details]

I'm watching the Cotto-Jennings delayed telecast again. Is it just me or do you also see Cotto being a bit sluggish?

A bit slow yes, he was a bit more defensive this time I'm sure it's nothing to worry about.

              Miguel Angel Cotto!!

Cotto has shown in the past 2 yrs his range and growth with every fight. He's gone frome showing speed and boxing abillity, with this fight he made it dificult for Jennings to punch because of his defense. And of course his signature power through body punching. I think he's ready to get back to the top of the devision.

Everybody is talking about Cotto is back and better than ever but how could you know if he fought a soft touch opponent? The only way to know if Cotto is 100% is for him to fight someone in the elite. Gomez/Jennings? Hopefully Arum doesn't set up another predictable fight like this one.

i find it funny that if junito didn't look good against michael jennings he had crap falling all over him... but now that he looked great, he still gets people doubting his performance. i guess you just can't win.
