    Let's be honest about Joe

Joe felt Dawson was not ready for him but Peter Manfredo was ready.

So there was no point fighting Benard Hopkins who he beat with a split decision but it was sensible to fight Sakio Bika.

So no need to fight Glencoffe Johnson but it was ok to fight Sakio Bika.

So Roy Jones was washed up in Joe's own words and still it was alright to fight a washed up fighter. It was also fine to say that was Joe's best performance ever and Joe had to quit on a high.SO his high was beating a washed up figher who had been knocked out so many times in the past few years.

Apparently Joseph Calzaghe does not do rematches but he did with Mario Veit.

Interesting how many times Joseph got injured everytime before a biv fight. He even 'injured' his famous hand before the Roy Jones fight.TV stations in the USA called him 'no show Joe'.Those in the UK didnt want him.I dont remember Joe being on PPV in the UK yet even Amir Khan is on PPV,Lewis was and also Hatton is.

Let's be honest, how do you rate this guy called Joe Calzaghe?Really who did he beat? With his long career fighting 'the best' how much money did he make? How much did other fighers make

I have more respect for Floyd Mayweather Jr. than this clown who hid clear across the pond.

Lets also not forget Joe offered Pavlik a fight before he was even a name and then claimed Kelly wasn't ready after beating Taylor. He wouldn't of beat Joe but the fight still would of been more meaningful then Roy Jones.

At the time everyone wanted to see the fight. Regardless of his skill set. I am not a fan of Pavlik and was glad he was beat but to say Calzaghe was right in avoiding that fight to face Jones is wrong. It would of generated just as much buzz. The outcome would of been a Joe victory but so what? Instead Hopkins had to expose him on his 43 birthday while Joe fought the shell of a mans shell of a man. Lets be honest..... Bernards legacy drastically improved with a win over the former P4P Pavlik and so would of Joes. Instead he will leave the sport with a win over Jones, but most of the casuals probably think he is still in his prime. Some people on this board think Joe can't fight at the elite level anymore FFS.

I rate him as a HOF'er and an ATG.

If Mayweather indeed is finished I rate him as a HOF'er also but he falls short of ATG status because he retired in his prime with dangerous challengers looming.

I love how people keep getting facts wrong about Joe's career.

#1 Yes some fans do want to see a Bernard Hopkins rematch, but it is pointless from Joe's perspective. He doesn't even get credit for winning a split decision. If he wins comfortably next time, people would dismiss it as a win over a 44-year old and besides, the first fight would be an absolute stinker. Who would pay to see the rematch?

#2 The Manfredo fight was made because Peter had more exposure in America

#3 The Roy Jones fight was all about money. No one seriously believes that the Roy Jones that Calzaghe fought was anything like the former P4P #1

#4 Are you not aware that Mario Veit had worked himself into the #1 contender spot for the WBO belt when Calzaghe fought him the second time. He publicly stated he didn't want to, but it was either fight or get stripped of his belt.

#5 Are you seriously doubting he has hand trouble? Lacy's handlers called his bluff in 2005 when he postponed their fight. I haven't heard them moaning about fake hand trouble since though?

He's definately HOF and TOP 100 ATG

Good post. chiyoko, read it and learn.

On Jones, though , obviously money was important but I think it was also just as much about Calzaghe wanting to fight Jones and Jones wanting to fight Calzaghe. The fight was agreed by the two of them over a mobile phone, with a straight 50/50 split and no bull****. They simply wanted to know who was best, a 2008 Calzaghe or a 2008 Jones. Sure, maybe a 'prime' Jones would have fared better but in the absence of a time machine that option wasn't available.

Past their prime or not (and considering his subsequent demolition of Pavlik it's not easy to argue B-Hop was past it), both RJJ and B-Hop were boxing legends. Dawson was not and, as yet, is not. But B-Hop apart Chad is the best in division now, let him forge his own legacy from a new generation. Good luck to him in that, he is a skilled and exciting fighter- but he doesn't need Calzaghe any more than Calzaghe needs him.

The Manfredo fight was simply made to raise his profile in the U.S. Dawson was not on the radar then. Hopkins and Jones bought the cash which Joe deserved after a long career. Dawson doesn't bring anywhere near the cash needed to make that fight make sense.

Calzaghe has retired. Get over it. The funny thing is, everybody on this board said they nobody would remember Calzaghe when he retired. If that is true, you sure do speak about him a lot.

People only talk about him because hes pissed most people off for retiring with a cowardly padded record, which makes him appear much better than he actually was. If he had the balls to fight elite fighters in their prime, even if he lost, he still would have way more respect than what he has now.
