I didn't think the fight was that close at all i thought Sugar Ray Leonard, was always clearly ahead. And yes they should of let Wilfredo Benitez finish the fight, but the reason they stopped it early was because a fighter just two days before that fight was killed. I just checked it up and it was Willie Classen vs Wilford Scypion.

Pernell Whitaker's win's this by comfortable UD but it would be a very frustarting night for Pernell Whitaker. I don't really think Wilfred Benitez's defensive style along the ropes would be effective against Pernell Whitaker, and plus Wilfredo Benitez was a bit of a hot and cold fighter.

Pernell Whitaker beat better fighters than Wilfredo Benitez, and reigned alot longer. I do think Wilfredo Benitez does get a bit overrated at times. No disrespect too the man he was a hell of a fighter and winning the title at 17 was incredible. But i do think Wilfredo Benitez would lose to alot of the ATG's at Welterweight/Jr Middleweight.
I don't think Benitez really gets overrated, people hardly talk about him. He has a couple of truly great wins on his resume even though he declined at such an early age.
Then again he was already fighting world class opposition by the time he was 17 years old so he did spend 7 years at the top.

Benitez made a fool's mistake against Curry, traded with the bigger puncher and got nearly knocked out because of it. I believe he was only 18 years old at the time he fought Curry and Weston.

He was never the same after moving up to middleweight and taking a beating from Hamsho.

        Benitez's resume at 140+ lbs:
        Roberto Duran
        Carlos Palomino
        Antonio Cervantes
        Maurice Hope
        Carlos Santos

        Whitaker's:
        JC Chavez
        JC Vasquez
        James McGirt
        Rafael Pineda
        Diosbelys Hurtado

          Yeap.

I got and Interview of hearns and Leonard, where they say that benitez is the best Boxer they had ever seen. In fact when talking about the fight, leonard said, that he was fighting with a mirrior. Because everytime he tried something, Benitez already knew what was coming.

I gotta disagree. I actually prefer Wilfred over Ray but I just don't think Benitez, regardless of his condition and preparation, would ever have got enough done offensively against a guy as slick and quick as Leonard to win the fight. He made it exceptionally hard for Leonard in the first half of that fight simply because he was so difficult to hit.

You are right though the fight should not have been stopped. Having said that I see Ray thrashing out a close but clear decision against any version of Benitez.
