i see, so if arum matches then cotto has to automatically take arum's offer.

couldn't cotto just low ball with with some dummy promotion company, then let arum match it, then buy out for cheap?

He is his promoter after all and no matter how he was enraged with the decision he did not clashed head on with the court verdict, and how could a promoter stand against one of his best boxers just to give in with Cotto's bitterness??? If Cotto suspected that his lost with Margarito was because he used the same "dirty" tactics against him before, then he should fire his staff in tasked of supervising on the wrapping of Margarito's fists because he did not do his job well! But then, this is still just a su****ion, no proof to back up that Margarito had use the same thing with Cotto! But good for Cotto in capitalizing this issue to justify his only lost to Margarito.
its possible that cotto is just using the margarito mess as a bargaining chip against arum in negotiations over a new contract.

        • I think it could be a very good idea and move for Cotto... if he manages to leave Top Rank and begin talks with Golden Boy Promotion's then he has definitely done something good for himself. I think fair play to him if he somehow manages to switch from Top Rank to Golden Boy.

Arum is doing something de****able... Margarito was caught cheating, and was given a fair ban that they should just take like a man instead of trying to walk around it... which is what they are trying to do, they would gain more respect by taking the ban for a year without fighting and then coming back rather than walking around it... Margarito needs to learn a lesson from his mistakes.

The only reason Arum is so pissed about the ban and is trying to trod around it is all due to money... he is pissed off because he has lost out on fights which could make a lot of money on the bigger stages in America.

That's my thoughts anyway... and I gotta say Cotto gains a lot of respect from me by doing this, he is not backing down because of his promoter he is standing his ground and giving his opinion (which his opinion is to do the right thing), and to lose trust in Arum because of this and wanting to switch promotions tells you what kind of person Cotto is, so I give him my credit and respect for not backing down and telling people what he thinks of the situation.

          • why is defending margarito such a crime against cotto? cotto doesnt have to fight margarito for 1 year at least.

All Arum did was stay loyal to his client when he could have just jumped off a sinking ship.
I understand your point, Scott. But I have a hard time believing Arum was being Loyal. Margarito has a large Mexican fan base and I believe Arum does not want to lose that. If this had been one of his fighters that doesn't bring in alot of PPV buys(Joshua Clottey) I have a hard time believing Arum would have been as supportive. There's also principle involved here. If that substance turns out be really be plaster, then Arum is a disgrace to continue supporting Margarito and his trainer because of the dollar. I believe that is what angers Cotto so much.

For one, it's very possible that Margarito did the same thing in the Cotto fight. Cotto is just too much of a gentleman to say that outright. Arum's actions show he doesnt give a **** about that or the fighter personally when it comes to money.

Cotto has never used that as an excuse for why he lost the fight.Although he has every right to be su****ious. After the substance is determined in March and if is found to be plaster, no way in hell and I'm going to believe Margarito didn't use it in the Cotto fight whether it's proven or not. And I don't buy for one minute that a professional like Margarito(since he was 16) has no idea what's put in his wraps. That's some BS there.
