Since Kostya Ricky has really fought top notch competition (not every fight but even when he fought lesser guys it was mostly to set up getting bigger fights).
Ricky Hatton Deserves Credit For This At Least

I think that was just before Tarver agreed to fight Hopkins, who moved up to make the fight happen. Thats my point, sometime you gotta move up weights and make the fights happen.
There's no excuse really for staying in your backyard and saying you will only fight in the big fights from now on, then fight Peter Manfredo in your backyard.
Calzaghe MOVED UP to fight Hopkins who beat Tarver. So whats your point?Comment

I know what Ellerbe said on 24/7 - you know.......the show they use to hype the fight. Any clown can see that Mayweather wanted a payday and that some sarky comment from Hatton had little if anything to do with making the fight.

Bingo, Floyd took the fight because it was a huge money fight and very marketable. He didnt do it to "teach hatton a lesson" everyone calls out the top guys, everyone wants the money fights. Floyd would still be fighting if he fought everyone who called him a name or talked trash about him on TV.Comment

You cant seriously say there is nothing calzaghe could have done to make bigger fights in his career, thats what we are talking about, big fights, even now rather than fight the man many see as the best light heavy weight in the world, he retires and says he has nothing to prove anymore.
So listen one more time now, If you are boxing in a poor division and you want big fights, you can move up and get big fights, or move up, make a name for yourself and make a big fight later with someone perhaps coming down a weight to fight, or a catchweight fight, you dont spend years against Kabery Salems and Evans Ashiras in your backyard and then only get around to the greats when they are in their 40's.
And yes Mayweather's only reason for fighting ricky hatton was money, thats why he turned down a de la hoya rematch which could make him more money, Ellerbe going on british radio(not hbo) telling people mayweather was pissed off at what hatton said and that he wanted to postpone his lay off to fight hatton isnt good enough for you, because obviously you know more than Floyd himself and Leonard ellerbe, your not just some wise ass mark.Last edited by Technical_Skill; 02-17-2009, 02:59 PM.Comment

Do you know what his record was at SMW? that ****ty crap division Calzaghe should have left to get better fights?
5 wins, 6 losses.Comment

Ps. Apparently Johnson reckons he tried to make a fight with calzaghe but calzaghe pulled out of the deal a few times. But it doesnt matter, cos calzaghe fought everyone he could, he couldnt have fought better fighters or taken part in bigger fights.
When Jones supposedly was too scared to fight him, why didnt he move up weight, go to the USA make a name for himself, chase jones, make the US fans wanna see the fight?
And for the last time, he could have moved up earlier, gone to the USA and made a name for himself, thus potentially making it easier for him to get some bigger fights.
I mean, Chad dawson, He has held the WBC and IBF titles and is seen by many as the best light heavy, but Calzaghe wont fight him because he has nothing to prove? Not even after Dawson finishes Tarver?
I think its generally accepted that if any 'great' fighter needs to prove himself, its joe calzaghe.Comment

At Least he's making the big fights happen, I respect that.
I respect the fact he left warren and that silly WBU belt behind and is making some proper fights.
He deserves credit for this, In his last 3 Fights, he took on the best of his generation in his absolute prime at 147 in the USA, took a comeback fight, then made the biggest fight with a top guy at 140 and now is taking on the P4P no1 again in his prime.
So I think by the end of it he would have fought 2 all time great fighters in 4 fights, that deserves credit.
The guy is fighting Prime Legends, unlike the other well known British boxer, who doesnt, and seems to get more credit.
he should've gotten gatti at 140.Comment

To get back on topic.
Calzaghe seems to get more credit than hatton on this forum, and sometimes I dont get why Hatton gets such a raw end of the deal.
Hatton is fighting Prime legends, he could have stayed in England with His kosta win racking up a 50-0 record and calling himself a great, but he risked his 0 against a prime legend.
So he deserves credit for that, If calzaghe is one of the all time greats, shouldnt hatton be in their too for being a 2 weight world champion and having a better resume if/when he fights pac.Comment
