I wouldn't pay attention to him he has been making the same point for the last 24 hours he has probably wrote 43 and 40 about 100 times in that time its getting tired. Before all these guys were talking about calzaghe avoiding pavlik and this would have been the case now had hopkins not shut him out, hopkins is still a top fighter you need only look at the pound 4 pound rankings. Yet he had to hold, foul, fake injury, and generally cheat his way through his fight with calzaghe.
People who haven't followed calzaghe's career a long time won't be able to distinguish the fact that he isn't in his prime anymoreComment

as a zaghe fan im happy with his retirement, part of me still wants him to go on but i know that if he doesn't have that mental hunger and motivation then he should probably leave the sport, it whens fighters dont have that motivation anymore that they get hurt and i dont want that for joe.
imo if dawson had faced hopkins and beat him then zaghe would have taken him, but alas it was not mean to be.
joe has set the bar for any SMW, he is the man who all future SMW's will be measured by.
people do seem to think that he is in his prime, its a shame that zaghs best years were wasted im0 his peak years were between 2000-2002.
joes reflexes and chin have deteriorated as well over time, hes been cut twice in his last two fight and been decked in both as well. when you consider that hes very rarely been cut in his enitre career and has only been on the deck 4 times in his career then it brings to light the fact that his skills are on the decline.Comment

Jones I grant you, but Hopkins? No way. I'd argue Hopkins is closer to his prime now than Calzaghe is. Age is irrelevant.Comment

I will disclose I don't like Calzaghe, but honestly I could care less either way on this subject as I feel Joe was not as bad as his critics say and was not as good as his lovers would have you believe.
My question though is in your reasoning on this point.
In an earlier post you stated
So how did he go from on the cusp of being out of his prime right before the Kessler fight, to being WAY past his prime for Hopkins (just 5 months later) and Jones (just 1 year) later. Did Kessler take that much out of him? Did the move up in weight effect him? (I am offering explanations, because I am curious, not trying to be a wise ass)Joe Calzaghe is past his prime. WAY past his prime IMO. He was on the cusp before Kessler and was clearly on the slopes during BHop and Jones. The fact he still managed to pull out the wins in each case (despite Plan A not working in any of the fights) is a testament to his ability.
You say he is further from his prime than Hopkins is. You obviously arent using time as a determining factor (unless you are suggesting Hopkins was either still in his prime at the time of the fight or had only come out of it in the matter of months preceding the Calzaghe fight). So you are obviously using skill (and its deterioration) as the measuring stick of where you feel their primes ended.
This raises 2 questions
1. What skills do you feel Calzaghe exhibited less of in the Hopkins and Jones fights that he displayed in fights with Kessler, Lacy, etc etc.
2. What fights from his younger years are you comparing the fights of his later career to to make this determination of his skill deterioration, since most of the opponents earlier in his career are far inferior to those of the last 2 years?
I appologize for taking things somewhat out of context and using semantics as part of my argument (semantical arguments are cheap), but I am curious on these points.
(I dont generally proofread my posts so I hope this all came out clear)Comment

I have seen plenty of his fights on Nuts and to be honest I disagree, He has always been open to the straight right hand and in some of his fights in the late 90's early 00's he was far from impressive i would actually say in some ways he is better now except for the fact that he has lost some power due to his hands. No, not Carl Froch's entourage. The complete numpties on here who are having one final go at the current SMW and LHW #1 who has gone almost a lifetime without being defeated and has finally called it a day.

Should he have fought on? For me, Dawson was the only fight out there but a) it didn't bring any money and b) he was fighting Tarver. The fact of the matter is that there's always a contender wanting a fight. Always. There'd be someone after Dawson when he beat him.
Right decision. Right time. Good luck Joe.Comment
