Benn says that Calzaghe always stepped up his game against the best opponents like Jeff Lacy, Mikkel Kessler, Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jr. He even goes as far as admitting that Calzaghe would have likely beaten him if the two of them were around in the same era. To me it doesn't even make sense to make these match ups. Hagler was a natrual middleweight who never fought above 160. Leonard was too small for Calzaghe and past his prime above 160 as was Hearns. That's like matching Calzaghe with prime Bob Foster or cruierweight Holyfield.

But that takes knowledge of boxing more than 10 years ago, and logic as well.

Things that 80% of this board are devoid of.

      • The benn that said that is the Benn of now.The one who's sold everything that his ever had to do with boxing and is a changed man altogether..

The dark destroyer would'nt of said that in the 90's
        Different man

                  • well calzaghes a bigger guys than hearns hagler and SRL so its not really fair to put him in the ring with any of the, imo hagler doesn't have a style that is suited to fighting at weights that are higher than his own weight. SRL struggled at the higher weights and imo would also be too small for calzaghe. hearns has a punchers chance but again its nothing more than that.

as for mythical match ups with current/former SMW's id like to see what benn thinks of calz and mclellan, calz and rjj, calz and toney etc. imo calz is clearly a notch above the domestic comp (benn, eubank, collins maybe even watson) but id like to know how benn thinks calz would do against some US fighters. imo benn is in a better position than most to judge because he has fought the best UK (eubank collins, watson) and US (mclellan, barkley) fighters and has seen the sport on both sides of the atlantic.
