eh, the situation was a little screwy. I dont blame people for getting confused. especially considering Roy beat the same guy that Darius beat to become 'lineal' champ immediately after Darius did, and in more impressive fashion too.

it doesnt matter, because these lineal champs sometimes can be deceving. more than half the time throughout boxing history the #1 contender in the division was the real best fighter at that weight, not the 'lineal' champ. why? because that lineal champ cant be stripped of his title, and can simply get freebies if he gets gift decision or fights weak opponents for the rest of his life.

Williams was old and Barkley wasn't. He says it because it's true.

Barkley was a big favorite over Toney and picked to win by almost every expert. Toney upset the odds and now you want to say he (Barkley) must have been old because he lost to a legendary fighter who was in his prime?

Ratings are subjective. It doesn't change that Merqui was still top 10 when Jones blew him out and deserved a ranking. Also using the "It's a US magazine, so that's why DM wasn't ranked higher" is pretty dumb if you ask me. Who did DM beat that was better then Charles Williams by 1995? McCallum is a different story and I see your side there.

I'm curious to how though that was ranked in 1996 if you have it. After Jones moved up, did they have him at 3 with Hill and Maske 1 and 2?
Sorry if I'm being a ****. here's the deal. Sosa-Jones in early 96 was a catch weight fight when Roy was between things at 68; it wasn't an all-out Light Heavy fight. Jones didn't officially move up until two more defenses at 68, fighting McCallum for the interim WBC belt. Jones wasn't rated by anyone at 75 yet prior to Mccallum; Ring or anyone else. McCallum-Jones was literally the night before Hill-Maske and Tiozzo hadn't officially vacated yet (claiming he couldn't make weight when it was really probably couldn't make Roy). The following issue, it was Hill 1, Roy 2.

By the end of 1995, DM had beaten a good fighter in Barber, once seen as among the more promising guys in the division, and posted five title defenses and moved up for a belt at Cruiser. Williams was well on the other side which is why the Sosa fights were as good as they were. Williams would have messed him up a few years earlier.

Barkley didn't have as far to fall because he was always just Barkley; win some, lose some, always show up throwing heat. The argument you're making is confusing; I didn't say williams was a lesser win than Barkley per se. I was addressing that Maske's overall comp was solid enough.

Considering Barber's youth, it was at least as good a win as Williams and DM didn't get canned in two rounds to start 96 either (though his first fight with Rocky was a funky mess...look it up. Home cooking). He was at nine defenses by the end of 96, finshing with a Christophe Girard who was a good little fighter.

I do amend my never on Sosa though; looking at his record and how ass 75 was then, he probably did crack it. Always a fun guy to watch either way.
