Zsolt Erdei is not the lineal champ imo

Going away from all the "MARAGARITO CHEATED!!", "MOSLEY'S AWESOME", "PACQUIAO WAKAKKAKAKAGYO BEAT HATTON", "WLAD SUX HAYE'S ****!!", "JOE FRAUD CALZAGHE", and all the other common NSB topics, I'm going to present why Zsolt Erdei is not the lineal champ and why Joe Calzaghe is:

Originally back in 1996, the general "fact" around here is that Maske vs Hill was for the vacant belt because it was the 1 vs 2, but Roy Jones Jr.'s last Super Middleweight title defense was in October 10th, 1996.

Virgill Hill vs Henry Maske was November 23rd, 1996. Roy Jones Jr vacates his title and moves up to Light heavyweight. When he moves up,

HE SHOULD BE RANKED #2. Jones had already fought at Light Heavyweight against top ten contender Merqui Sosa earlier in January. That means when he moves up to campaign at Light Heavyweight, has already had a fight there against a top ten contender, and his pound for pound status. That makes him the #2 contender in the division or the #1.

If you want to get REALLY technical about it. He fought Mike McCallum, ranked 6, at Light Heavyweight a day before so he had already been in the rankings by then too.

Maske vs Hill wasn't for the vacant belt, which does not make Zsolt Erdei the lineal light heavyweight champion.

"How is Joe Calzaghe the champ"

Joe Calzaghe is the champ because you could either say Roy Jones was for beating Reggie Johnson, who was ranked #3 in 1998 and you would have the 1 vs 3 exception OR you had the belt filled with Johnson and Tarver fighting being the #1 and #2 contender.

Either way, you get Joe Calzaghe as the lineal champ. Any questions?

He should be ranked at 2, but I don't think he was so technically, it's still Erdei.

The Ring didn't have ratings in 1997 do to them stopping the printings. Technically their were no official ratings, so it wasn't cleared, but I think my explanation makes sense.

WTF are you talking about? They still published a top ten every month and Hill and Maske were 1-2. They just weren't recognizing champs from mid-89 forward and the print ceased the same year for a second.

          Not in 97.

As to the original point, Roy beating Sosa wouldn't have moved him past either of those two, both of whom were at the end of double digit title defense runs against the best of the Light Heavyweights. The undisputed tag in 96 was WBC/IBF/WBA. Maske-Hill was BA-BF; the BC belt was held by Tiozzo who Hill had beaten during his then current reign (easy and Tiozzo beat McCallum). That's what made it a World title fight or would have in saner times. Doesn't mean Roy wasn't better than all of the above and Zsolt Erdei is just an asterik which shows why lineal is not a hard proof of anything.

          It's just an is.

Seriously, his P4P status should move him past two guys in a division who have been knocking off real top ten contenders (which Sosa was NOT at 175...EVER) just because he's Roy. It would be less than shocking to find out the thread author has never seen Maske at all.

Didn't they stop publishing rankings for a bit?

                http://www.boxrec.com/media/index.ph...yweight--1990s

                Why doesn't 1997 have a rating?

Also Merqui Sosa was a top 5 contender. Jones had beat him. Hill obviously still deserved the #1 spot, but in Maske's title defenses, the competition wasn't as strong.

Jones was one of the best, the second best in that weight class by rating in that weight class. That makes Maske and Hill and unification fight only. Not for the lineal championship imo.

Erdei is the champ, the Hungarians rule. Nothing more to say.
