  • What shocked me about the Mosley-Margarito fight

Was how little survival instinct Margarito had when he was hurt. He just seemed to have no experience with things not going his way and when to tie someone up and buy time. Once he was hurt he had no way of defending himself.

While I picked Margarito to win, I always said a guy could not beat Margarito by running away. The faster you run, the faster he chases you. You have to fight Margarito and back him up, which is how Mosley did it.

I thought the corner should have followed their first instincts to stop the fight because he was a sitting duck. What happened was inevitability, he got creamed and really hurt.

But what it shows is that nobody is invincible. Nobody thought it could happen to Margarito, just as some people think it can never happen to Mayweather, Vitali and others.

On any given night against the wrong guy, it most certainly can.

Also, that last punched that knocked Margarito down a second time was completely unnecessary. The ref was a split-second late in noticing the towel and it cost him.

I was surprised that Margarito totally abandoned his signature body attack.

Counter right hands often have that effect. Margarito doesn't bend his knees and dip to hit the body, he bends at the waist and lunges. Against a good right hand puncher, that is a very bad idea.

He has been rarely hurt, what did you expect? Last time he got stunned was Santos 5 years ago. Guys who rely so much on their chin and have rarely gotten stunned much less hurt rarely know how to survive when they do get hurt.

Yes, it's particularly effective to hit the body of a guy who has a very long, thin torso at that weight class. If only Cotto had stood his ground and picked his counters, he could have beaten him. But he didn't, and he must be hating himself for not.

Either he's been cheating a while or he aged 15 years in a few months.

Yeah but you'd think a guy who has been a professional since he was 16 who fought in the gym all these years would know how to clinch. Cotto has the same issue.

I think he fights the same way in the gym and with the larger gloves and headgear, I doubt he ever gets seriously buzzed in there, I don't think he's ever had to learn how to survive.
