Thoughts on if boxing is struggling and why

I think boxing is doing well, we have plenty of great fighters in the game still, and a lot of up and coming talent. Also the first big fight of this year (Berto-Collazo) showed boxing is still on top.

The corruption between all of these organizations is the biggest annoyance though. (WBA, WBO, etc.)

Exactly, I'm still wondering what boxing needs to be saved from or why its in a slump.

We're in 2009, there are many more options for entertainment than there was in the 40s and 50s,

and still, boxing continues. I don't know what writer said it but he basically said that people were saying boxing was dying back then.

He also said hes still waiting for that to happen.

The highest grossing fight ever was less than 2 years ago.

Staples is practically sold out for two fighters who apparently aren't draws.

yes, but you've chosen the one exception. Look, I'm not saying boxing is sick at the moment... I WORSHIP the sport. But its not like I'm revealing classified information. Arum, Goosen, GBP, and King have all said that the financial sector of the sport is struggling. The people at HBO have said the exact same thing. The fights are as good if not better than they have every been. The sports marketability has definately taken a hit.

Arum also cut ticket prices in half for Marg-Mosley in order to sell out the Staples Center.

I think that's the problem, because that's the "casual" fan's perception.

If the "casual" fan would only look a few divisions below Heavyweight, they would find something to fall in love with.

I don't see boxing struggling...Infact, i can't seem to see the competition MMA poses. Maybe i'm clueless or something. But boxing hasn't been this exciting in a while. The Welterweight division is a fun division with amazing charismatic fighters like Clottey, Cotto, Marg, Judah, Mosley, Mayweather (he's coming back for his crown) and possibly Pac. As of now, that division is carrying boxing firmly on its feet....and Heavyweight division looks promising w/ Haye, and sadly the Ukrainians...i'm look for the Nigerian Nightmare's comback. Middleweight is also appealing w/ Taylor, Bute, Froch, Pavlik, Kessler etc....Lightweight still has the Marquez bros and many more......

And with polarizing trainers like Floyd Sr, Robert, Legendary Stewart, and slow Roach...ALL THAT DRAMA MAKES FOR GOOD BOXING

To ANYONE and EVERYONE:


We are not saying that the quality of fights has gone down! We, as boxing fans are all on the same team! It is the market value of the sport that is struggling right now. Now, thats most likely a result of the overall economy struggling, but the point is, that sector of boxing is definately struggling. Lets face it, if love of the sport makes up half the heart of boxing, the other half is the lucrative opportunities it offers. So, I don't pretend to speak for you Europeans, because I don't know as much about your economy right now. But for us Americans, if you don't think the market value of the sport is in a bit of a slump... slowly and carefully remove your head from your ass.

I think this MMA and UFC epidemic has driven people to the conclusion that "boxing is dying".

boxing is coming back, promoters are starting to realise we wont watch crap fights anymore so we are being treated to fights like berto-collazo, margarito-mosely, pacquiao-hatton (its on right lol), diaz-marquez etc

the UFC has actually been good for boxing, its been a reminder for boxing that it needs to keep making good fights in order to stay on top in the USA

and the sport is flourishing in europe, Latin America, Canada,the UK and parts of Asia (Japan, Phillipines, Thailand- not as popular as muay thai in thailand but still popular- China is starting to host more pro boxing, Russia is quite involved too.......Indonesia has some quality fighters
and even in Australia, i mean mundine is a cancer but people still know who he is and talk about him, and darchinyan and that get some decent coverage- and if mundine miraculously grows a pair and starts fighting good fighters the sport will benefit

no i dont believe what writers fight and i understand that the past year did have good fights some great i understand all these things but the bottom line is take for instance dont get angry that i referred to this its just some thoughts look in the mixed martial arts world its not perfect i know this but the fact is that they put on the fights fans want to see im not only talking about just the main event they put on great fights in almost every fight card im not talking about if you like the sport or not im just aying for what it is they put on great fights, all there top fighters in each weight class has fought each other at least once and they havent they continually schedulling these fights to happen, you almost never here of fighters complaining that there arent gonna get paid enough or they should get a better split of any pot, management isnt so involved with putting together fights some mixed martial arts organizations are but as for the ufc the have a person in charge with other people around that decides who fights who, i know the mixed martial arts world is not flawed but so far its working hopefully they keep doing what there doing for that, i do agree this year looks promising for boxing and i hope it does work out. im a boxing fan as well as a mixed martial arts fan so dont get upset remember its just internet writing just looking for more comments
