Thoughts on if boxing is struggling and why

I believe there are many different reasons why boxing is struggling, some of them are managment, money, and for some not all the fighters themselves i just wanted to here other peoples thoughts and comments just curious what people think.

I don't think boxing is "struggling" right now, nor has it ever been. It's just not the centerpiece of American sports right now, they way it once was.

We're always going to be around, because there is big money to be made, and the fans of this sport are a very loyal group of people.

Granted it's a bit of a problem with so many sanctioning bodies, title belts, weightclasses, etc.....

But I don't think anybody can say we're "struggling". 2007 and 2008 were stellar years for us.

I don't think anyone can deny its in a slump. I think the main reason is the availability of the sport. People talk about MMA being on the rise... of course, there are HUGE matches (for MMA standards) on $pike tv. Other than ESPN 2 and the occasional bout on VS. Boxing isn't available like it used to be. Even after HBO and Showtime subscriptions, the world has still gone PPV crazy! Boxing is in the shadows, whereas it used to be in the spotlight.

I think boxing is doing well, we have plenty of great fighters in the game still, and a lot of up and coming talent. Also the first big fight of this year (Berto-Collazo) showed boxing is still on top.

The corruption between all of these organizations is the biggest annoyance though. (WBA, WBO, etc.)

How is boxing in a slump?

The highest grossing fight ever was less than 2 years ago.

Staples is practically sold out for two fighters who apparently aren't draws.

Let me be the first to deny that.

A good example of boxing being in a "slump" is 2004 and 2005. Those years were less than stellar. But things picked up in '06, and blew up in '07. '08 took the ball and ran with it. And right now, we're off to a good start for '09.
