Sure, the economy is in rough shape, but if you give people value for their money, they'll be happy. Case in point: The Jan. 24 Antonio Margarito-Shane Mosley fight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Top Rank and Golden Boy, which priced the tickets very reasonably for a fight of its caliber -- $50 to $300 -- say they have sold almost all of the lower bowl's 12,000 seats. Top Rank's Bob Arum told me the other day that there are about 1,000 tickets remaining. With that kind of success, they've opened the upper concourse with tickets priced at $25. Who says boxing is dying? Even in this economy, it is alive and well, as long as you give folks a real fight to come out to see at a price that doesn't force you to pick between tickets or the mortgage payment. Remember, it was this time last year that Madison Square Garden execs, who grossly overpaid promoter Don King for the right to host the Roy Jones-Felix Trinidad fight, had the audacity to ask $15,000 for a ringside ticket. Margarito-Mosley is a better match, and the atmosphere is going to be fantastic because tickets are priced reasonably, the fight is taking place where it belongs -- in Southern California, where both fighters are based -- and the seats will be filled with real fight fans, not high rollers, casino guests or folks who just want to be seen. Just give the people what they want in a place that makes sense at an affordable price and the seats will be filled.

    Update

Over 17,000 tickets have been sold for Margarito vs. Mosley for Saturday, January 24 at the STAPLES Center in Los Angeles. There are about 600 upper balcony seats remaining. Top Rank and Golden Boy are promoting. HBO will televise.

And Affliction is rumored to break less then 2k. I don't have the ticket prices, but they're said to be reasonable.

Not trying to start wars, but Affliction got stiffed in the PR dept.

Yeah, well it seems like Arum took the lead and the tickets where so reasonably priced that the demand was just awesome. They originally were not opening up the upper levels but ended up having to and selling them for 25 bucks.

It is just a dumb ass move to put both events on the same day, it makes no sense at all. The affliction event was cancelled from another date though, so maybe it was bad planning after the cancelation.

Well the event is awful itself. Pitting Fedor, whose the best and greatest heavyweight in MMA history, against a hasbeen fighter, and filling the rest of the card with garbage. What did they expect?

The reasoning behind that was they thought they were doing a hybrid event with GBP, but they couldn't get past HBO. It went downhill from there.

Why do you guys assume that these two events are even fighting for the same fan base ?

They aren't, contrary to what many of you believe.

Besides, those who do like both sports, and are interested in seeing both fights will be able to Tivo or record the HBO fight, and watch the Affliction fight live on PPV.

                    * I doubt many people from NSB will fall into this category though.
