  • Joe Calzaghe is a HOF'er. But to put him on the level of a Toney or Hopkins is just ******. The best prime fighter he fought was possibly Mikkel Kessler. That says it all.

Toney had to beat an extremely difficult, prime, young wiley top three pound for pounder in Michael Nunn. Then fought on even terms with Mike McCallum...twice. Those guys alone are enough. Not only that, these guys had big wins through multiple divisions. Can you imagine Calzaghe moving to cruiser and defeating David Haye in a thriller? Coming off a year layoff? Yea right.

Same with Hops. They fought the right guys at the right time. And ultimately, that makes them better.

      • I think those three are better than Joe prime for prime.

I mean you literally have in his prime Years between Eubank and Lacy where there should have been no excuses that he was too green and untested a guy hanging behind his WBO trinket, and facing monsters like:

Evans Ashira (decent fighter I guess))
          Mario Veit
"iron" Byron Mitchell (widely touted as about to lose his title at any second and on the slide before joe fought him. Nevermind that he was never that good to begin with).
Kabary Salem (insn't this a cigarette brand?)
Mger Mkrtchian (wtf don't jobbers use vowels in their names?)
          Tocker Pudwill (funniest name ever)
          Miguel Angel Jimenez (who?)
          Charles Brewer (epic fail)
          Will McIntyre (yeah okay)
          Mario Veit (fail)
Richie Woodhall (more like Richie FAILhall)
David Starie (starie > ricky frazier. Yeah. okay)
          Rick Thornberry (too easy)
Juan Carlos Gimenez Ferreyra (do i even need to make a comment)
Branko Sobot (TRANFORMERS. MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE)
Robin Reid (decent fighter but Calzaghe barely beat him)
Omar Sheika (decent fighter. very average though)

Keep in mind this is from 98-2005. I mean come on.

Sure we had the occasional Robin Reid or Omar Sheika ( the only two i left out here) but really...he pissed a lot of years away with this crap. Even struggling against some of these clowns like Kabary Salem and the mighty powerpuncher Byron Mitchell by being knocked down. All while mostly at home in Ice Rinks, and the welsh local YMCA with guys like Dave Parris reffing and all the comfort in the world to rack up title defenses.

You want to know what impresses me the most out of Joe other than the longevity of always pulling out a win at a high level? It's the fact that despite that subhuman ridiculous crap resume he was able to beat good fighters like Kessler and aged Bernard. Or even hang with them.

Looking over these names I'd expect a protected guy that would get blown out at the first sign of trouble and while I don't think he ever really stepped up or took a MAJOR challenge (closest being Kessler who still has yet to beat ANYONE worth two ****s)- still with that resume I'd assume even an old old old fighter or a young gun would take him out.
have you EVER lost a Calzaghe argument?

          • I am surprised no one blamed the US yet for Joe's resume problems.

Sorry yeah, like I said I was rushing to a meeting. Lacy was nobody.

              Roy was old and shot.

              HAHAA. Nice typo point out.

I posted this earlier. This sums up my problems AND gives Calzaghe credit.

So the ball boys can shut up now.

Briz do you think the American media was holding Joe's career back?

All three of these fighters have good speed, footwork and can adapt! Joe was only suited for uneducated pressure and throwing a billion slap shots to gain olympic points victories against marginal competition and never looked good against a legitimate challenger.
The only legitimate challengers he ever had were lacy, Kessler and Hopkins and they were his best fights, your talking through your ass.

Yes, of course. I mean they constantly ****ted on his defenses and made him feel bad about himself.

This must've made him and Warren question themselves AND get indignant and say "**** those fat yanks, I'm not fighting over there, Roy Yones should come to me".

I find it hilarious that the American and xenophobe comments are brought up at me ever.

Is that why I think Lennox is an ATG and maybe one of the top 20 best heavyweights of all time easy? Must be because he's "American" right?
