I think the real tragedy of Fernando Vargas is that he could not find a style that accented his strengths and minimized his weaknesses (like Jermain Taylor as well). He was too big and slow to be a super slick hit and don't be hit guy, but... he also was a bit too tentative to be a truly wreckless killer.

Even though he won very clearly in the Quartey fight, I still saw that he wasn't exactly thrilled with having to counterpunch.

He just couldn't seem to find what he needed in order to be truly great.

That said, Vargas is obviously a completely badass name to have on your resume, especially an undefeated Vargas.
after the vargas fight, trinidad was never the same fighter as well, if you think about it, vargas did more ,in a way, compared to trinidad, i mean he was more competitive than tito was in fights, maybe vargas ruined titos career aswell

vargas got hit in the nutsack like 20 times before the ref did a thing, probably trinidad had illegal handwrapping in that fight as well, if vargas beat trinidad the cheater and , he would probably be bigger than oscar de la hoya

maybe Im alone here, but I dont think Trinidad has as big of wins as Morales's wins over Barrera and Pacquiao...

then you take into account his wins over Junior Jones, Zaragoza, McCullough, Ayala, Jesus Chavez, InJin Chi, and then a bunch of other guys that Im forgetting...plus he should have gotten that win over David Diaz.

then again, Trinidad....was a special fighter. its hard to say.

                Pretty close call here.

Erik's 10 best victories in my opinion:

                Barrera
                Pacquiao
                Ayala
                Jones
                Zaragoza
                McCullough
                Kelley
                Chavez
                Chi
                Espadas

                Trinidad's 10 best victories:

                Vargas
                Oscar
                Carr
                Reid
                Campas
                Whitaker
                Joppy
                Mayorga
                Camacho
                Pendleton

I could get into this subject, but I gotta eat.

No I concur. I think Barrera is one of the 5 or so greatest 122 pounders of all-time...and you could argue him being a top 10-15 Featherweight as well. Pacquiao has done nothing but impress since his early blunders. These two are all-timers. You couldn't really say that about anyone Trinidad faced, outside of Oscar (and that's a TOUGH argument), who didn't allow the fans to see a true conclusion in that fight. Vargas was an excellent fighter when Trinidad defeated him, but certainly one cannot say he was any more dangerous than Pacquiao was when Erik defeated him.
