Well, even though a ref is telling a fighter to go to a corner, the counting is still happening right? If that is the case, it's pretty obvious that Liston did not make the ten count IMO.
Ali vs liston the phantom punch

problem is it's up to the ref to count.
he wasn't counting.
it's also unfair for the downed fighter when the count is not being made in front of him.
fighters generally stay down until the count is at 7-8 before getting up. helps make sure they have recovered as much as possible. getting up right away is not recommended......ask zab judah.Comment

But look at Liston when he fell, It's not like he fell, then stayed on his knee for a second or two to get his composure together. He fell, tried to get up, mid-way fell AGAIN, then got up the second time. Lemme try to find a video of it.problem is it's up to the ref to count.

yeah but walcott never counted.
that fight was all so screwed up.Comment

Here it is:
Even though you are right, that the ref should have done the counting, I think it would be pretty safe to assume that if the ref was counting properly, that would not be a fighter standing up in less than 10 seconds.Comment

problem is when do you start counting the 10 seconds?
the moment liston went down? then yes it was past 10 seconds.
but......walcott was busy trying to get ali to go to a neutral corner.
i want to know when walcott finally started his count. that should be the official count.
by the time he went up to sonny to make a count a lot of time has gone by.
if the count starts the moment joe stopped messing about with ali......then liston made the count.Comment

I used to be 100% convinced that Sonny took a dive. Then a couple of years ago when I saw an extended tape I noticed Liston stumbling badly after he got up. Of course the KO seems unlikely as Liston had an iron chin and Ali never KO'd anyone in the 1st round again. But it is certainly possible the KO was legit, not counting the worst refereeing in heavyweight championship history.Last edited by Scott9945; 01-13-2009, 04:31 PM.Comment

Forget Walcott. If you count from the time he hit the ground to the time he got up, it was exactly 15 seconds. That's a knock out last time I checked so it really doesn't matter what else happened, the fact of the matter was that it took him 15 seconds to get off the canvas.
By the way, if you got tagged square on the chin by any boxer you'd be lucky to get up without the aid of smelling salts. Now imagine if you got hit square on the chin by Clay. End of storyComment

there's always a few seconds before the ref can get to the downed fighter and start his count.
how many times have ali had a one punch knockout? how many times was liston koed let alone by one punch?Comment

Sonny couldn't beat Ali, you're right. But the second fight no fix was in. Blame the inept Joe Walcott for that fight being stopped, not Sonny getting dropped by a punch he never saw coming.Comment
