Your thoughts on Oscar De La Hoya...

Just wondering how you guys feel about Oscar. He got a lot of stick for wanting the Pacquiao match and got more stick for losing the fight.

I feel a lot of guys on here dislike him. Why?

Did you guys feel the same way before the Pacman match?

Also, how many on here would call him an ATG. I heard Bert Sugar not naming him in his top 100 because he lost all his big fights.
    Would you agree?

It probably has something to do with him milking the sport and the public for as much money as possible while being a part time fighter, his contradictory remarks don't help either.

He was a very good fighter in his prime though and he has helped the sport a lot by keeping it in the spotlight and by fighting the best for the most part, the sport will miss him whether some people will admit it or not, boxing will feel the impact when DLH does call it a career.

I'm not sure about him not being in the top 100 but he's not an ATG, definitely a first ballot HOFer though.

Best matchmaker of his generation, if he had the skills to back it up could have been top 10 P4P, alas he didn't.

He took away alot of fights that other fighters deserved (keeping them from the spotlight) only because he brings in money due to the hype job the US created out of a pretty white boy who won a gold medal.

          Real talk.

Oscar tried so hard to weigh less than Pacquiao thinking that he can beat Pacquiao easily and make his win against a little man more creditable.

BUT it backed fired on that fishnet wearing MEXICAN warrior.

haha that was priceless watching that fishnet wearing fruit loops gettin' beat down.

            What defines an ATG?

              No I wouldn't.

ATG: All time great have to fullfill 2 out of these following 4 critera, or almost fullfill 3/4 if you are talking top 100.

              1. Fight and beat other people considered to be possible ATG's. - Best example Suger Ray Robinson

              2. Fight in a strong division or divisions fighting many good fighters and unifying and domintating said divisions for a significant length of time. - best example -Marvin Hagler

              3. Transend the sport, be able to inspire and draw crowds outside the normal boxing hardcore fanbase - best example Ali

              4. Be involved in multiple great fights, the kind of fights that are talked about for years and are held up as examples to later generations as the way things where back in the good old days. - Morales Vs Barrera I, II and III is a good recent example

#3 is strange. Would you list Oscar as an example?

Anyway, good post. The interesting thing about the true ATG's is that in many instances, they rach accomplished most of the things you listed.

Surely Oscar fulfills the criterias of no1 and no3? He faced living ATG's including Chavez, Whittaker, Hopkins, Pacquiao, Mayweather.

And he definetly brang in crowds from outside the sport. He dragged in crowds into the sport of boxing.

Yes, he faced some ATG's but I'm more interested in who he beat.
