Joe Calzaghe, Paper Champ?

Hopkins is a fraud and a bum

All I ask of a fighter is that he fights the best in his division, not the best in the division either side, just HIS division.

Calzaghe beat 7 former or future SMW major belt holders. add in 4 or 5 other that fought for multiple other belts without winning one. The only major force at SMW that he didn't fight was Ottke and thats because no one would have beat Ottke in Germany and Ottke wouldn't fight outside Germany.

In the 20 fights at SMW only one guy came close to beating him and that was double world champ Robin Ried who spanked Ottke all over the ring for 12 rounds and still lost.

People can claim he ducked people but aside from BHop and RJJ who wouldn't fight him there was no others who could have claimed to beat him during those years, the most commonly sited person is Glen johnson who had a SMW record of 5 wins 6 losses in that period.

If Calzaghe is a paper champ then so is every other champ in the business bar the top 20 all time, not to say that Calzaghe is top 20 all time, just that only those fighters have risen above or been lucky enough to have a division stacked enough to beat other prime ATG.

I'm pretty sure that Reid, Brewer, Mitchell, Shieka, Lacy and Kessler where top 5 SMW at the time of their fights with Calzaghe.

Woodhall, Veit and possibly Bika where top 10 aswell.

Bika is top 5 right now.

lol, have you taken a look at Hopkins resume ?
Yes he's fought some great fighters but have a look and his resume is full of sub standard fighters, all boxers fight journey men or below par fighters in their career. Don't try and say Calzaghe fought tomato cans, when Bernard did himself.

out of calzaghe's 21 title defenses 13 of those guys were never in the top 10 ring rankings ever. one guy who was in the top ten unbelievably was manfredo.
out of hopkins 20 title defenses only 3 of those guys were never in the top 10 ring rankings.

unless you think the wbo rankings are a lot better than the ring rankings since the wbo had gary lockett as their number 1 middleweight and The WBO twice moved Darrin Morris up in its super-middleweight rankings in 2001, despite the fact that he was dead.

Yes. His only GOOD win was against Hopkins, which many thought he lost. And after that, that is about it. He says Kessler is his best win but what has Kessler done? Roy Jones shouldn't matter because Roy been washed up and shot for 4 years now. Lacy who?

His only fights now is Hopkins rematch, Dawson and Johnson. If he would win 2/3 then i would call him a great fighter. But he most likely wont and he will retire, then in 10 years and beyond, they would really see him as he is. A paper champion.

well since you didn't follow boxing you probably never knew that those were all top ten fighters cept william bo james, steve frank, and hakkar. guess your own personal rankings system is better than the rings?
