Duran was the best lightweight of all time, moved up in weight to beat one of the best welterweights of all time, moved up again and went the distance with one of the best middleweights of all time.

Won titles in 4 weight divisions, reigned as the lightweight champion for 7 years, defeated 12 or more world champions, fought the best in five different decades (60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 00's), etc.

      duran is a LIGHTWEIGHT.

for 12 years duran's only loss was to esteban dejesus. (which he avenged a couple of years later)

he was also the first man to ever beat sugar ray leonard. a prime sugar ray leonard.

      threadstarter is a moron.
What kind of excuse is that. He lost those fights clearly

floyd is a great fighter right?

what if he loss to say tito at 154 and hopkins at 160?

would he not be great anymore?

sometimes a loss can be just as good as a win.

his close foty loss to hagler is worth more than a win over any normal guy.

his win over barkley at 160 is like floyd beating pavlik at 160. totally amazing.

plus you guys do realize duran was already past prime in most of his fights above 135 right?

            his best weight was lightweight.

Floyd's best weight was lightweight as well.

Unlike Floyd though, Duran beat a prime Leonard in their first fight. Floyd can't say the same with his 147 resume.

And Floyd wouldn't be favored over the likes of Hearns, SRL, and Hagler.

Whilst i agree with you I still think Roberto is a great fighter. He might be slightly overrated by some, but he is still a definate ATG, probably top 25.

He's probably the greatest Lightweight ever, he beat a prime Leonard, and won the Middleweight title something like 17 years after winning the Lightweight belt. And he came back a couple times for some good wins when most people counted him out. But the main reason Duran gets ranked so high is because he was/is everybody's hero.

He was great when he won, but when he lost it was either because he didn't train properly or some other bull**** excuse. Difficult for anyone who didn't live through his career to rank him so high (most have him top 5 AT). His lightweight career and Montreal are enough to secure him as an ATG but what he did after is not enough to make him top 10 material IMO.

He QUIT in the Leonard rematch, refused to fight when he could've and people blame Leonard for being a sneaky bastard taking the rematch so soon knowing Duran liked to party and wouldn't be in shape. Ridiculous. He gets blasted out by Hearns and all we hear is how Hearns had just too much of a size advantage for him to overcome. Loses to Hagler but gave a good account of himself so it's alright for HIM to have lost yet another big fight. I mean De La Hoya is not a top ATG because he lost most of his biggest fights, didn't seem to effect Duran's legacy. He was also outclassed by Benitez, and by Leonard in their rubber match after beating Barkley. He dropped decision to Kirkland Laing and Robbie Sims before beating Barkley. No other fighter would've got away scot free with those failures. But he seemed to manage it. I dunno, I didn't live through his career as I said, but just hard to comprehend how he gets ranked so highly.

Do you guys not understand how long Duran fought for ? and the fact that he was good for all those years... Most respected writers and boxing experts talk highly of duran and most have him in the Top 5 or 10 ALL TIME.

went 1-5 agianst the fab five

                      1. leonard- was 1-2 qon a close split decision in the first fight quit in embarrassing fashion in the rematch

                      2. Hagler--lost a wide UD

                      3. Benitez--lost a wide UD

                      4. Hearns-- brutal ko

was 12-7 in championship fights, only amassed 12 title defenses out of 100 + fights.

at the time he was fighting he was not considered the best, so how can people now want to turn around and say he had a better career then ray and tommy when he didn't do much after beating leaonard the first time at the age of 29

He didn't lose a wide U.D to Hagler. Didn't Hagler win by like 2-3 rounds
