Great news for boxing fans

Crucial?.. hahaha, hardly. You think hardcore boxing fans having to switch to a different cable network is going to change much in the great scheme of things? If you do you must be dreaming.
And if a pseudo sport like MMA can get on network TV then what makes you think that an already established sport like boxing can't get back on it as well? It's not that promoters can't get on free TV, it's that they won't because it might entail getting a slight pay cut.Comment

Golden Boy is ripping off Bob Arum by stealing his idea of promoting their fighters on a seperate cable network like what Arum does with Versus you schmuck.
And putting boxing on cable isn't gonna do all that much good. We already have boxing on many cable networks. Now if Golden Boy was serious about promoting their product they'd put it on regular free TV.how do you know that? maybe cbs won't pick up a boxing slot because they don't think they can sell enough advertising. you're assuming a lot (unless you're a network executive).Crucial?.. hahaha, hardly. and you're either missing the point, or just disagreeing with everyone just to be difficult. more boxing on tv is a good thing. bob arum wasn't the first one to do it, brah.Comment

Versus wanting to get into Boxing and signing away 2 years to Arum so he could put on a bunch of **** cards headlined by Tye Fields is not the same thing to what GBP is trying to do here. They most likely have already found the sponsors and are looking for a network to put on it's up and coming talent, I think your confusing Arum ****ing over Versus/fans with Golden Boy looking for another outlet to root it's young fighters.Golden Boy is ripping off Bob Arum by stealing his idea of promoting their fighters on a seperate cable network like what Arum does with Versus you schmuck.

Golden boy seems to be looking at a new direction for boxing, they have built nice relations with Tecate/Cazadores and are partners with AEG. They are trying new things to promote the sport.Last edited by mrpain81; 12-15-2008, 03:03 AM.Comment

You should read the full article.Crucial?.. hahaha, hardly. You think hardcore boxing fans having to switch to a different cable network is going to change much in the great scheme of things? If you do you must be dreaming.
And if a pseudo sport like MMA can get on network TV then what makes you think that an already established sport like boxing can't get back on it as well? It's not that promoters can't get on free TV, it's that they won't because it might entail getting a slight pay cut.
One effect of the current economic climate is that there will be a concerted effort to curb major pay-per-view shows in the upcoming year by the powers that be.
"You know what happens when you go through an economic downturn into an economic recession?" asked the Swiss banker, rhetorically. "Not just boxing, but any business, it comes out healthier. Because what they do is, they review their processes, they review their spending patterns. They review possible synergies and so on and that's not just businesses, that's you as an individual. If you make less money, what do you do? You have to look, you have to refocus, you have to prioritize. And that's the same with boxing, and as a result, all of these businesses - and the individuals - they're going to come out stronger and better out of a recession.
"And so it forces us to focus more, it forces us to rethink our approach and one of those is that there's going to be less fights on pay-per-view. As a promoter, I'd want to put all our fights on live network television, but it helps me to understand the fighters, what the consequences are, dollars and cents. Do you think Bob Arum necessarily wants to put Pavlik and Cotto in those two fights on pay-per-view? If he could put it live on HBO or live on Showtime or live on network television, don't you think he would rather do that? But sometimes as a promoter you have no choice and you have to do what is right for your fighter."
Schaefer is referring to the February 21st show featuring the returns of Kelly Pavlik and Miguel Cotto coming off their first professional defeats that will be distributed by Top Rank independently as HBO and Showtime passed on their return fights versus relatively safe comeback opponents.
"You have to keep them busy, you have to allow them to make a living and you need to do things. You maybe don't want to do it, but you have to. And that's the way it goes."
But Schaefer says that boxing will not only survive, but eventually thrive going into the future.
"I think if the fighters are understanding enough, some of these things will change and the fighters will understand what the economic environment is and it will be for the betterment of the sport. So I expect the sport of boxing to come out of this recession much stronger than it was a few years ago."Comment

No one is assuming anything here. Everyone knows the reason that promoters put their fighters on cable and PPV is because they can make more money per fight by showcasing them there. That's the reason fights first began showing up on cable smart guy... and of course putting fights on free TV would mean a cut in pay that greedy promoters won't stand for. And that's about the only thing these sleezeballs won't stand for.how do you know that? maybe cbs won't pick up a boxing slot because they don't think they can sell enough advertising. you're assuming a lot (unless you're a network executive).

And you're sort of right about the Bob Arum thing, "BRAH". Golden Boy already had their own series on HBO Latino called "Boxeo De Oro". For whatever reason that didn't work out so Golden Boy figures they should piggy back Arum's idea of making a seperate deal with another cable network that only showcases their self promoted fighters.
Make no mistake about it, Golden Boy isn't doing this to promote boxing in any way, but rather in self interest to promote their own fighters so they can bank on them on HBO and PPV's later on. Staying true to their real colors these guys are just looking for the green.Comment

but no one said golden boy was doing it for the greater good of boxing. golden boy's business is putting on these cards, which in turn is better for boxing fans, and the sport in general, because there will be more boxing on tv. that's it. i guarantee you it's not some golden boy conspiracy to undermine top rank.No one is assuming anything here. also, who even has "free" tv any more? that's such a small market. if boxing could pull in the advertising dollars that other sports do i'm sure a deal could be reached. who's to say a few years down the road it won't happen? this is definitely a step in the right direction.Comment
