The Margarito offer for $8 million came after that. Mayweather didn't want it, he probably felt he could get as much money elsewhere (he did with Goosen to fight Baldomir). Mayweather and Arum had most likely disliked each other for awhile.

I'm not too sure about the $8 million offer, if it contained any details where Arum would get options on Mayweather's future fights, if PBF had to say with Top Rank, etc...Top Rank and Golden Boy weren't working together at this point (Pacquiao-Barrera 2 was their first fight together, in October 2007), and Mayweather really wanted the big fight with DLH.

          MARGARITO OR DE LA HOYA......

          MAYWEATHER VS. MARGARITO SITUATION

The announcement of the fight never came, but several other shocking occurrences took place. The first occurrence did not surprise many insiders in the business as Mayweather declined the multi-million dollar offer to fight Margarito. The minute the fight was being talked about as an "almost done deal," numerous boxing experts, scribes, managers and fighters felts the fight would fall apart for one reason or another and it did.

The Mayweather camp says that a Margarito fight is still an option, just not on August 12. Apparently Mayweather's right hand, which he injured during the April 8 bout with Zab Judah, is still giving him problems and the general feeling in the camp is Mayweather will not be able to prepare in time for the August 12 date.

The second occurrence was something that many in business saw coming a mile away as Mayweather exercised a provision in his contract and paid Top Rank $750K to become a promotional free agent.

As Top Rank and several insiders have already stated, Mayweather has made the proper strategic maneuvers to position himself for a potential showdown with Oscar De La Hoya, which could possibly take place as early as September. Of course De La Hoya has to get past Ricardo Mayorga on May 6, and it is far from a guarantee that De La Hoya will win.

There are several reasons for the speculation that Mayweather's recent business decisions are due to a potential bout with Oscar De La Hoya. The first, Bob Arum, head of Top Rank, and De La Hoya, have been feuding ever since Oscar left Top Rank to start his own promotional company. The war of words between the two promoters have sometimes been public and often far from complimentary. De La Hoya went as far as to say that he would never make a fight with Mayweather as long as Arum as his promoter.

          SOUNDS KINDA SIMULAR TO THE
          FLOYD VS. COTTO SITUATION.....

With Oscar's announcement of only fighting two more times before sailing into retirement, Mayweather would have had to make a career decision in order to position himself at the head of the Golden Boy sweepstakes. Either call De La Hoya's bluff and move forward with Arum, or dump Arum in order to eliminate the biggest obstacle in making the fight a reality. According to many, Mayweather took no chances and left Arum.
If Mayweather went forward with Margarito in August, a September date with De La Hoya would have been a daydream. On the other hand, Mayweather reportedly left on good terms with Arum, meaning that if De La Hoya should lose on May 6, Mayweather still has an open door to easily make a bout with Margarito before the end of the year.

Mayweather's recent business decisions make total sense in the long run. Margarito is no hurry to leave the sport, at 28-years-old, the highly respect fighter will be around for several more years. The Golden ship on the hand is set to sail by the end of the year. The bout with De La Hoya, worth millions more than the bout with Margarito is a once in a life time opportunity for Mayweather.

If De La Hoya is successful against Mayorga, the road will be wide open for two of the most popular fighters in the sport to come together and stage one of the largest fights in the last couple of years. The storyline alone is enough to sell the fight on pay-per-view. De La Hoya, trained by Mayweather's father, Floyd Sr., fights Mayweather who is trained by his uncle Roger, his father's brother. The family angle, the new generation taking out the old, and everything else in between makes this bout a sure moneymaker.

Bob Arum has already announced a backup plan for August 12, a pay-per-view rematch between WBC heavyweight champion Hasim Rahman and mandatory challenger Oleg Maskaev.

              Mayweather ducked Margarito.

              This is a fact.

Margarito approaches Mayweather face to face and asks for a fight.

              Mayweather: you'll get your shot.

              He retired.

              Thats a duck.

And the other he wants to secure his legacy. If he would have fought Cotto a while back, then he would have won, abd people would say fight Margs. If he beat Margs back then and Margs beat Cotto, but lost to Williams, people would say fight Williams and h is ducking PWill.

I say he is letting them fight it out, like a round robin elimination kind of thing and fights the winner of them, so that his last fight can cement his legacy, instead of fighting, retiring, and still having questions left over.

This is such an important post, everyone should be forced to read it before they log in to their BoxingScene accounts everyday. This really explains a lot about why Floyd took the fights he did.
