hatton won the wbu belt before that. not that that the wbu belt means much but look at the guys he fought defending the wbu belt and look at the guys joe fought defending the wbo belt. joe had some very mediocre opponents during his reign.

look at some of the best defenses he made.

reid - also lost a few fight before fighting joe. in fact while joe could only manage a sd win. reid was beaten by silvio branco on all cards in his next fight after the sd loss to joe.

brewer - was 2-4 coming into his fight with joe. he lost to sven and got ktfo by echols.

mitchell - just loss to ottke before fighting joe.

these were good wins for joe against former champions but why didn't he fight them when they had their belts?

why did joe fight them after they had just loss? because now it seemed a safer , more winnable fight?
