  • The difference between Hatton and Calzaghe......

How they got their first title?

Ricky Hatton - Ricky got his 1st major belt in 2005. He beat Kostya Tszyu for the Ring/Lineal and IBF 140 title. Kostya was the king at 140 , hadn't lost a fight in 8 years and was top 3 or 4 p4p in the world. Kostya also had just beaten Sharmba Mitchell , a fellow champion and top ranked 140 guy , by KO a few months earlier.

Joe Calzaghe - Won the VACANT WBO 168 title in 1997 by beating Chris Eubank. Eubank was a good fighter and good name but he had lost 2 of his last 6 bouts and hadn't been ranked at 168 for years after losing 2 times to Steve Collins in 1995. In fact the Calzaghe fight was his 1st fight at 168 since 1995.

    Fighting as a Champion.

Ricky Hatton - After winning the Ring/Lineal and IBF 140 titles in 2005 , Ricky went on to fight the WBA 140 Champion in his next fight just 5 months later. 6 months later he fought for the WBA 147 belt and later on went on to challenge Floyd Mayweather Jr. for his 147 belts.

Joe Calzaghe - After winning the WBO 168 title in 1997 , it took Joe 9 years to challenge a fellow champion in Jeff Lacy and another year to fight Mikkel Kessler. After becoming a pro in 1993 it took Joe 15 years before jumping up in weight to challenge a fellow champion.

As the saying goes..."You have to dare to be GREAT." With Joe it seems..."He just wouldn't dare."

      Fighting outside of the U.K.

Joe Calzaghe - In 15 years of boxing Joe has only fought outside the U.K. a total of 4 times. 2 of them this year.

Ricky Hatton - Ricky started boxing 4 years later than Joe and has fought double the fights outside the U.K. than Calzaghe. In fact in his 1st year as a professional boxer , Ricky fought in Madison Square Garden in New York. It was only his second pro fight.

I'm not saying you can't fight in your hometown or you have to fight outside your country......but must be nice to have hometown judges and hometown crowd all the time in your fights.

          Big name bouts.

Joe Calzaghe - Wins over Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones are impressive W's on the resume. Unfortunately for Joe those wins came about a decade too late. Is beating a 43 yr. old Bernard Hopkins , who had lost 2 of the last 4 going into the fight , that impressive? Is beating a 40 yr. old Roy Jones , who lost 3 of his last 6 and was called shot 4-5 years ago after getting ko'd back to back , that impressive? I guess that means Jermain Taylor , Glen Johnson and Antonio Tarver are All-Time Greats as well.

Ricky Hatton - He has wins over Kostya Tszyu and Jose Luis Castillo. Yes Kostya was past prime but Kostya was still the man at 140 and hadn't lost in 8 years. The Kostya win was much more impressive than beating a 43 yr. old Bernard Hopkins if you ask me. As far as Castillo he was a shot fighter but was he any more shot than Roy Jones is now? Ricky might have lost his biggest fight when he fought Floyd Mayweather Jr. but who hasn't loss to
Floyd? He went up one weight class to challenge the undefeated #1 P4p fighter in the world. Joe could have done that as well but he didn't now did he? Maybe Ricky should have waited 6 or 7 years before fighting Floyd Jr......

One last point......when Ricky fought a shot Castillo it was just a tuneup fight to make him look good against a known fighter. They wanted to showcase Ricky to the American audience before the Mayweather fight.

Joe fought a shot Jones for a big win.

The real difference between Hatton and Calzaghe.

Hatton - ''**** you Frank, am off to do my own thing!''

Calzaghe - ''No problem Mr Warren, i'll do whatever you say!''

                  Good point.

                  Warren over protected his fighters.
