Interesting thing about Pacquiao-Marquez Round 1 in 2004

people can watch as much film as they want or they can get the fastest sparring partners but its a different story when that speed is right in front of youComment

First off, great fight and my hat goes off to both of them. Who cares who you thought won, both guys fought a great fight and in the end neither deserved an L.
Here is what I found to be interesting. After the third knockdown, it looked for all the world that the fight was over. If you see in the second row, the promoter Murad Muhammad starts breaking for the ring immediately thinking the fight was over.
How wrong everyone was. Marquez got up and gave Pacquiao the fight of his life.
That fight was so close to being done (and frankly I'm surprised the fight wasn't called but happy that it wasn't because Marquez had tons left) and in many people's minds it was over. Just shows what kind of heart Marquez had.
Yes I noticed this as well, i remember watching it live thinking that it was going to be stopped by the ref. If there were only a few more seconds in that rounds, Marquez woulda probably went down, and Pac wouldve had a first round KO or TKO over Marquez which wouldve looked amazing on his record.Comment

Knockdowns early in a fight quite often are the result of a body still being cold. There is always a very good chance the guy will recover and do well.
Pavlik/Taylor 1 is another example. In round 2 many thought the fight should have been stopped. Pavlik was getting ****** around, but still had his thoughts together even though his legs were not listening. The Ref knew it and let it go.
It is when a fighter is already tired that they really need to pay more attention to. When a fighter gets tired, there are no reserves and they can really get hurt. Springing back is much harder to do.Comment

I wouldnt say the judges were ******, they just each value one thing over another. Some judges value aggresivness and workrate, some value accuracy, and some value few power shots over many weaker ones. They are all different and as long as we have multiple judges we get variation. Not to mention how close most of these rounds were.the judges in this fight were ****ing ******, how does one judge have it 115-110 one way and the other has the same score the other way?
lampley, merchant, and ledderman should score every fight that hbo promotes.
i could judge a fight blindfolded better than some of these **** ass judges could.
regardless of who i thought won, the fact remains that the score cards were all WAYYY too different from each other.
But yeah kudos to JMM i thought he won that fight.Comment

You know, there's something I've always wondered about that fight, but never have quite made a topic about it to discuss it.
Where would Márquez be today had the fight been stopped at that moment and what would people think of him today (in 2008)?
I mean, when I think of Márquez I immediately think of heart and determination when his name pops up. I know he's had several other fights that have been worthy of his credibility, but that dramatic comeback in 2004 garnered him massive respect. When has there been a situation where someone gets dropped 3 times in a fight (in the first round no less), starts fighting and not surviving and from a massive start-off deficit manages to pull out a draw on the scorecards? It'll be a very long time before (or if) that ever happens again.
I mean, after being dropped three times, Márquez let go of the ropes as he slumped into the canvas and covered his face with his gloves, as if he would've been okay with a stoppage at that moment, but Córtez let the fight continue and what transpired was one of the most tension-filled fights in recent history as Márquez rallied to turn the tables dramatically.
Which again begs the question: Where would Márquez be today had the fight been stopped at that moment and what would people think of him today (in 2008)?Comment

fighters are wary of fighting jmm. i don't know if he would ever had gotten a chance to get back in the scene especialy if he stayed at 126 when everyone had gone up to 130.Comment

where would Marquez be today if he took the $750K for the rematch, beat Manny (which i thought would happen if the rematch happened soon enough) and went on to face Morales?
he would probably be fighting DLH in december insteadComment
