I will start off by saying Mosley, Hopkins, and Cotto are in the top 5 of my fav active fighters. I will also say I am not going to bash Money May or any other fighter in my response.
With that being said let me start off by saying you have done your research sir. Before you pointed these bullet points out I had not been aware of those facts. In the same respect for business sense in order to get big named fights ie fights against other champions you have to make a name for your self. There is no other way to make a name for your self other then winning belts and getting your face on TV and PPV. Cotto and Arum did what was needed to do to make him a name brand in boxing. He is a devastating body puncher this is a known fact. He defintely has flaws but what fighter doesn't? Every bad, good or great fighter can be beaten this is a fact. It is a matter if the opponent has the style and the smarts to figure out how.
The reason he fought for so many vacant titles well it can be looked at one or two ways. It can be looked at A Cotto rather fight a CONTENDER as you were happy to pointout or B the current chamo wasn't offered enough money to fight COtto or he himself avoided Cotto. I think it is a mixture of those things. Remember my friend boxing is a sport and when these guys retire they can't live off legacy. They aren't going to get checks from fans like you and me to help support them once they leave the ring.
Cotto is defintely a very good fighter with a killer insticnt. he won 7 out of 11 rounds and was ahead on the cards when he couldn't continue against Margarito. i ,ean people say he quit I say his bosy quit on him. He could have stood up and got knocked out but the damage he might have absorbd could have been perminate. i mean who knows at this pint if he will ever be the same as he was beofre that fight? You say he is a big question mark well you can say the same for alot of fighters who you and others consider great.
Fact of the matter is he fought Quintana (who beat Pwill) He fought and beat Zab (who gave Money May hell for 4 or 5 rounds) he fought and beat my fav Sugar Shane Mosley (who will give anyone hell when he comes to fight)He fought and lost to Margarito (who most in the weight class won't even get into the ring with) for those 4 fights I have to give him credit. That 4 fight run is very impressive and most great fighters don't fight that many brand names their whole career much less fight those 4 guys with in a two year period.
yes his punches are sometimes waisted. Yes he is hit by uppercuts and over hand rights rather easily and Zab, Mosely and Margarito proved. Yes he has fought for vacant titles and yes he won thos matches. One thing that can be said for him is that when he gets in the ring it is an exciting match. All 4 of those fights I mentioned were very exciting to watch. He changed styles against Mosley. Made adjustments against Margarito in order to fight with movement. He showed the heart of a champion by getting up off the canvas gainst Ricardo Torres and won the fight. Th fact he can be hurt and he comes forward and is looking to hurt his opponent makes him exciting.
When Cottof ights he isn't going out there with the mind set I am going to out point my opponent. he goes out there with the mind set I am going to break down and knock my opponent out. When I watch a Cotto fight I am not fighting to stay awake I am fighting tio keep my a$$ on the couch and in my seat. So yes you made some valid points and yes there is still some question marks to be answered by Cotto and yes we may never have all the answes but I bet we surely will enjoy watching him go out and there and ask other fighters some questions. Cotto vs Michael Jenning for the Vacant WBO Title. I will be watching and waiting for Margarito vs Cotto II....Lefty
What's up Lefty,
Thanks for the response...and this post I will give you a my honest opinion
belief and concerns with Cotto.
COTTO IS A HUGE ---> ????
Not Cotto is a piece of ****.!!!!
My problem with Cotto is that he doesn't dares to be great compared to other great fighters in history..!!!
and when he did one time.. He folded under the pressure.
Cotto does well against fighters who are looking to become champions.
But 7 years into his career what we dont know about Cotto yet to a certain extent is
- How would Cotto do against a reigning Champion, who is in his prime, young and looking to validate himself.
7 years into Cotto career, and Cotto cannot say to himself I actually Beat the Man to become the Man.
But Cotto and his supporters wants to say "I am the Man now, because I won his title while he was gone."
To me Cotto is like the New York Knicks when Jordan Left in His Prime, yeah they are the Eastern Conference champions, but
who did they beat to get there...????
Thats why we have words like CHAMPION and CONTENDER.
Yes Cotto has a good resume for a fighter who is an up and comer and who is trying to make a name for himself.
But Cotto should be past that point of his career where he is trying to make a name for himself,
and he should be at the point of his career where he is validating himself.
- That is a huge difference.
Cotto understood that, thats why he took the fight with Margarito, to Validate himself.
And what did him in is the lack of preparation and training throughout his career cause him to fail against Margarito.- and Also Margarito Showed that unike a contender, a Champion will finish the job when he has opponent hurt.
Lefty
"He showed the heart of a champion by getting up off the canvas against Ricardo Torres and won the fight. The fact he can be hurt and he comes forward and is looking to hurt his opponent makes him exciting."
And I actually admire that about Cotto, I have said it many times.
I actually think Cotto is a good fighter. But Sense I hold Cotto to the standard people want to hold great fighters too, People think I am overly Critical of Cotto. But in actually I am being Honest.
To me Cotto is starting to become an all around fighter. And that is dangerous. He has a crushing jab, and powerful hook. He has ability to adapt.
and he will come back from punishment, with offense instead of defense.
To me Cotto has the has the most POTENTIAL in boxing.
The one thing that I will openly admit about Cotto that can make him a great fighter is that. He doesn't **** around, he is focus. And that is something that every great fighter has.
Thats what separates him from Judah,Margarito, and Paul Williams to a extent.
Miguel Cotto can have a legacy like Roberto Duran or Fernando Vargas.
It's up to him.Last edited by Horus; 11-18-2008, 02:41 PM.

Props Horus that's a solid post. There are things I disagree with but not much. I don't really think he doesn't "dare to be great" because he's fought for vacant titles. But I can see what your saying.
And I agree that he still has a lot to work on. I think his team is a huge problem. He's always been so confident that he's openly admitted to not watching tape. That's arrogant, and quite frankly ******. He and his team, need to work on his weaknesses and erase them. He hasn't done that, and it's a huge problem. But these are fixable problems, problems that a lot of boxers that care to, learn just by experience. If he can mature, he can become great.

That S.O.B set cotto up for failure by not bringing along right.

Man i have been saying this for years, Cotto makes the same mistakes he made at the beginning of career, NOW.
He leaves himself to open
He waste punches
His footwork has not evolved, from up and down, to all around.
and His defense is ****.!
Maybe Im wrong and cotto needs these vacant title fights to work on these
things, because champions will continue to counter and beat cotto allday if he does not fix these problems. 7 1/2 years into his career.

Why is it that people find it hard to answer the threadstarters question??? I think those questions are genuine about Cotto and i would wait for him to answer and prove people wrong.
Maybe its a coincidence that Cotto alway go for and win a vacate title.
