    roy

there are no excuses when you step into the ring. i fought 119 amatuer fights and lost 21, never had an excuse. if you don't feel right don't step in the ring, its that simple. with that said, roy did look flat in the fight. its like waking up in the morning and knowing you are going to have a bad day; he jsut had a bad day at the office; in boxing that is very costly.

Big Roy was at the Hanshaw fight. I think Roy is still more than capable of beating any top 10 light heavys including Calzaghe.

LOL why everytime roy gets his ass whooped, something has to be wrong with him.either he wasnt motivated, he didnt train, hes doing too much at one time or whatever it may be...just give calzaghe props because nobody thought that roy would get clowned the way he did, weather hes in his prime or not. glen johnson knocked him cold but this beating joe put on him was worse than any, he was toying with him, he showed more speed, roy's reflexes were off. i think roy will continue to fight because his pride wont let him retire after getting embarassed the way he did. but who can he beat? i dont think another fight with calzaghe makes sense because i beleive a fight has to be competitive in order to have a rematch. a fight vs hopkins wont make sense either because hopkins was hoping roy would beat calzaghe so that their rematch would attract more fans, now its pointless, bernard's focus is primarily on calzaghe from this point on. he could maybe fight chad dawson, i would give him a chance to win that fight because dawson doesnt really have devastating power, he proved that vs tarver when he couldnt knock him out after hitting him with everything he had. but i think he would take a tune-up fight with a fighter like anthony hanshaw or prince badi-ajamu,a fighter no one knows so he could shine and get his confidence back. the main problem with roy, in my view, has nothing to do with him not being in his prime because he still has blinding speed. his problem is that he doesnt trust in himself enough to engage, he wants to avoid getting hit on the chin at all cost. after the knock out to tarver, his confidence to a major blow. thats why in the calzaghe fight, he was reduced to throwing only one punch at a time and quickly turning defensive, its rare to see a combination from him. another issue that he has to work on is his fight game on the ropes, it seems like when he touches those ropes, hes vurnurable to anything you throw at him. tarver gave everyone the blueprint on how to beat him in their first fight, thats why glen johnson quickly bumrushed him at the start of their fight and kept it on the ropes all night. even badi-ajamu tried that same plan in the first round of their fight, and he won that round on all scorecards, but jones was just too fast for him afterwards. he needs work on his footwork so he could get out of those ropes ASAP. look at fighters like mayweather and hopkins, their footwork are exceptional, its too hard to trap them on the ropes and keep em there. so roy is still a great fighter, but he needs to beleive in himself and he'll be fine, he took a beating but it wasnt a career ending beating.

Just call the Roy Jones Sr. Boxing Club in Pensacola, FL. and ask for Big Roy.

A receptionist for the gym will scream out, “Roy!” and moments later he is on the line. It was just as easy to reach Jones Sr. when his son fought Joe Calzaghe on Nov. 8. [details]
the author of this article made a mistake.

Roy Sr. attended Roy's fight against Anthony Hanshaw.

Big Roy says Roy needs someone to push, thats why hes losing. I disagree, while that might be part of the problem, the bigger problem is simply father time. Nothing lasts forever. Jordan isn't ballin anymore, it doesn't matter who you are, it ends at some point.

Roy did alot without Big Roy. So that shows when he was young he could win. Hes just old now.

I've never considered Roy Jr a great fighter. He is a good fighter with great ability. He has always beaten his opponents with his gifts, but I have never witnessed him winning off of sheer guts.Well, maybe his first fight with Tarver, but that's it.Against Calzaghe, I didn't see a shot fighter. What the world saw was a fighter with no heart and was content only to go the distance. All of the GREAT fighters knew how to dig deep to pull out a victory. You could still see that he had power and speed. He still had his legs under him. He was intimidated by Calzaghe and Tarver.I'm not saying the GREAT ones never were intimidated by some opponents in their career, but they knew how to channel those fears and rise to that other level.Until a fighter can do that,no matter how dominant they are, they are just ordinary prize fighters.

Roy to me is not a great fighter. Never was. He's like Tyson. He LOOKS great against lesser opposition, but put someone in front of him who is not afraid and has heart (and madd skill doesn't hurt) and you see the outcome every time. I used to love Roy. But after the Paz fight, he fought bum after bum after bum. Plus he beat a few past their prime.I give him his props on the Ruiz fight, but the real heavyweight champ was calling him out.(Lennox)Why didn't he give Toney a rematch after he destroyed Holyfield? Why didn't he give Hopkins a rematch after he picked apart Trinidad? He was so upset with Nigel Benn's behavior after the Gerald McClellan(misspelled) fight but never challenged him. Before that tragedy,Gerald was knocking out everybody at middleweight. But instead of fighting him, what did Roy do?Moved to super middleweight. Is that what great fighters do?I give De La Hoya more props than Roy.He's fought the best of his era.Maybe he didn't win, but he made them exciting and fought with heart.I'm disappointed with Roy. He could have and should have went down in history as the best of all time!

He is one of the greatest fighters of all time.

An exemplary boxer who has hardly any equals. For him to have world titles in four different weight divisions is incredible.

It is just a shame that him and Joe Calzaghe did not meet years ago when they were not both in their late thirties.

                      But well done Joe.
