The negotiations aint over yet. Add also that several potential players have upcoming fights (Taylor, Lacy, Froch, Pascal). It's a pretty interesting positioning battle as to who gets the big fights. Patience and schrewdness is a virtue right now managing and promoting the big players around 168 lbs at the moment.
Kessler turns down Dawson!

Probably yes legacy wise. However Hopkins might consider Dawson a more dangerous prospect (he really is a cruiserweight) than fighting the smaller Kessler. Remember Hopkins has always liked to feast on smaller guys.
Anyway Kessler must be high on the list. At least no.2 if Dawson is the only other.
Hopkins seems intent to solidify his legacy now and that means a Dawson fight is possible.Comment

He isn't a cruiserweight, he regularly weighs in below 175 and only moved up there a couple of years ago, he says he can still make 168, he normally starts camp at 180 so he's definitely not a cruiserweight shrinking himself into a light heavyweight.

Regarding the weight I'd say this: If Dawson could make SMW why wouldn't he agree on a fight at a catchweight? To me that seems like a good scenario for both fighters given that it's a risky fight for both. No titles will be on the line at 170-172. Your thoughts?Comment

Yes Dawson is possible. But so is Kessler. I have a hard time coming up with other names.

And it's not to say Dawson can't make 172-173, he was 173 against Johnson, 172 against Mendoza.Comment

Well i remember a few comments from Dawson saying he thought he could still make 168lb remember he hasnt been up at light heavyweight very long.Comment

Dawson has other options out there right now whereas Kessler's options aren't that great right now, Kessler needs Dawson more than Dawson needs Kessler IMO so I can understand why Dawson would want Kessler to move up to fight him.

I cannot see dawson having more options than Kessler TBH. Biggest fight for him is Hopkins. After that it's Kessler or Johnson. Both of those must be considered high-risk fights. Why not take Kessler at a catchweight without a belt on the line? In that way the risk will be reduced.Comment
